In one of my two 'day jobs' I worked for Bell Telephone. They asked for suggestions, and I gave them a design for a new terminal that would be easier to work on plus quicker and less costly to maintain. They were awarding $2K for a suggestion that they used (in the 1960s that was a lot of money).

They thanked me for the suggestion, told me it wasn't anything they wanted to use.

A year later, I started seeing a slight modification of my terminal all over the place. Within a year it was in every apartment building. I never got a penny. But I still got my hourly wage.

Second 'day job' was as a field engineer for a manufacturer of Cable TV gear. We had to sign a form stating that anything we develop while employed by the company or for 5 years after belonged to the company and they would have sole rights to any patents, even if I developed it at home.

Neither day job lasted long, I am a musician in my blood.

BTW, book authors get the same treatment as musicians. If you are a star you make big bucks, if not, the publisher makes it all.

The art gallery gets more of the sale price than the artist in most cases.

The studio musicians go in for a price, and the studio pays them the price they agreed on. The price works on supply and demand of a-list players who can get the job done in one take and the potential revenue the company sees.

A good studio musician who was in the right place at the right time with the right skills made a lot of money.

Most big corporations have the power to make most of the money while they share only as much as they have to with the workers. And that includes artists. It's just the way corporations work.

Tommy Tedesco used to have a monthly column in Guitar Player magazine. It was always an interesting read, he'd show charts he'd played on and how he would actually play the parts.

He also had a great sense of humor. Some of the clips they showed in the movie of his seminars made me LOL! And that Gong show appearance is priceless.

While I enjoyed the movie, some of the follow up in several places shows a bitter angry attitude from Carol Kaye toward Hal Blaine. I found that quite distasteful and I lost a lot of respect for Carol Kaye because of it. I found a lot of it on Amazon where she has posted snarky comments about "certain people have taken credit".... and a lot of yada yada that all says "It was ME. Look at ME. Give ME the money."

Very hateful stuff. I understand that people can get bitter as they age but I felt this was over the line. They were the best of their time, but their time is gone and while they are BOLD footnotes, they are truly now just footnotes. That world of session musicians at the level they were is long gone. Maybe that anger she exhibits should go away as well.

Also being shown on AXSTV on my comcast cable. I watched twice last week.
I remember being at a music teachers conference in the 60's at SF Cow Palace where Carole Kay had a booth promoting her bass and guitar books. With her was Joe Pass and they basically jammed all day at arms length from passing conference attendees. I don't remember much else from the conference as I was listening to something far more interesting than anything else going on.

I have a lot of respect for musicians by the way they play. If I don't care for their personality, I can still enjoy their music.

Buddy Rich was one of the world's best big band drummers, but I've never heard anyone say he was a nice guy. I like his drum playing, and probably would have never played in his band.

I've also been in enough bands to know that when a group of musicians get together, there are bound to be conflicts. Look at Lennon and McCartney for an example. Sam and Dave from the famous duo of the same name hated each other, but made some great music together, and their live performances never showed their problems, just a great, top-notch concert.

I enjoyed the movie and the 3 hours of bonus interviews on the second disc very much. I took out of it what I liked, and didn't dwell on the very few things I didn't like.

Carol played great bass, Hal played great drums, Tommy played great guitar, Plas played great sax, all of the others did the same, and together they created the soundtrack of part of my life. I learned a lot about music by covering the parts they made up on the spot.

All in all I think Denny did a good job, it was after all a tribute to his father and the other musicians that were a piece of musical history for a decade or so. I enjoyed it.

Most of the musicians I've known were actually not very nice people. Egotistic, self-promoting, avaricious, back-stabbing cretins who, without musical talent, probably would have followed a life of crime. Present company excluded, of course. grin

Oh well, I read that -- and slept over it. I don't know what was eating her at that moment she wrote that. I'd even risk a bet that she didn't proofread.

Musicians at that level need to teamwork, but they probably don't get there being teamworkers.
