I recently found that a CD we registered with CDBaby (about 12 years ago) is now available for free on YouTube
Does that seem right?

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWnK9fRB6CEBTw4lrfcmxyb42EjzgCuEH

"Published on Oct 25, 2015
Provided to YouTube by CDBaby"

I guess if its freely available I might as well share.
This was done in Powertracks start to finish about 10 years ago.

/shouldn't we get some of the ad money?

I wish you were getting something Bob.

However, nothing appears here when clicking on anything from that link:

I, at first, had the same result as VideoTrack then I changed horses from Chrome to Firefox and with the YouTube Unblocker (it is no more available in Chrome without lots of tweaking) the videos are unblocked and there.

Advertisments are shown, you should ask YouTube for your share as the/one holder of the rights. (And maybe investigate, who the SimpletonGuru is and his connection to CDBaby.)

No comment on the music, I just don't have the time right now to listen.

I'd have them pull it, just out of principle.

I know what they look like; I took that picture!

I knew it was for sale on Amazon .. THAT is what CDBaby was supposed to do for us, not post it on youtube for free.
simpletonguru was our band name. According to YouTube, CDBaby submitted the songs. Doesn't seem right, as they were paid to sell our music, not give it away.

90dB; I see CDBaby in your sig .. may want to check up on them.

There are a few members here with material on CDBaby. This might be setting a worrying precedent?

Bob, when you signed up with CD Baby, there were a series of choices ranging from "stick my music anywhere you can" to "only what pays me" with a few degrees in between. I suggest you log onto your account to review your choice. They may consider that YouTube is now a way to monetize music, one of those 'degrees in between'.

I need to check this myself...

EDIT Drat, I'm there too, and CD Baby did it November 15.

This is "Youtube auto generated music" (google for more info) and has been going on for some time. I discovered it a few months ago when I made a video for one my old songs and a YT generated one popped up along with all the others I didn't know were on there....surprise.

The thing to keep in mind is that today Youtube is the top music search destination on the internet - so if you want people to find your music, it's probably more of a good thing that your music is on there rather than not.

To get paid, you'll have to activate and use the content id system yourself or sign up with a service that handles all the youtube ad and sync licensing for you. You can go to your cdBaby account and sign up with Rumblefish. You can also use any company of your choice like Audiam or some other one to take care of it for you. Whichever company you choose will take a percentage and you will be under contract to them for a specified amount of time.

You can also do it yourself without using a middleman by monetizing your own YT channel. Having a company do it might be easier and better in the long run so it's not bad thing to consider your options before deciding.

Unless there are a really huge amount of hits, from my research, the money from ads is like all other online music revenue these days = miniscule, so it's not like you're losing much by doing a bit of research before making your decision.

If you're going through another digital distributor besides cdBaby they may have a company they work with already in place like the Orchard, etc., and you're already covered.

Hope that helps. smile

It does, thank you Josie. I had thought being in SoundExchange would cover this, but I see there is more to do. I was considering making my own videos, and I still might do that.
