I've read that Windows Defender is so-so in the security department, especially lacking in prevention of threats that aren't in the database yet.

Most AV apps treat suspected first-day malware by the way it acts on your computer. This is where I read Windows Defender does the worst job, so first day malware has a better chance of getting through.

At least that's what I read in the magazines.

This is the site my computer repair guy uses to evaluate malware. He says it's non-biased and targeted towards computer pros.

I use a highly rated add-on AV plus the paid version of Malwarebytes.

$40/year is not much to pay IMHO, and the added security is worth it.

I'm also pretty aware of phishing and never click a link in what might be or definitely is spam. I don't trust attachments with potentially suspect extensions from my friends without verification that they sent it and even then I scan it first.

As far as I'm concerned, that proverbial ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure in the data department.

But then I run a business on my computer.
