Does anyone have any suggestions for successfully getting vocal melody to midi?

I have tried melodyne for this (not a lot) with really bad results. I may be doing something wrong, or maybe it just not that great for that. I got my wav imported, could adjust the notes, but when I exported to midi, there was very little that resembled my melody. I have no idea why.

If it's your own vocal and you can record it, then I would try singing it with just "La's" (or "Doo's" or some other single sound)on each syllable, rather than the actual words and see if Melodyne handles it better (after making sure first that it's in tune).

Caaron,

Both Realband and BIAB can transcribe a single-note vocal or instrumental line and produce a MIDI file.

In BIAB...

1. Make sure the vocal is on the Audio track

2. Open "Audio Edit"

3. Select the whole track

4. Under the "Edit" option in 'Audio Edit', select transcribe

I just tried it with the tutorial file Listen.MGU found in...

"\bb\Documentation\tutorials\Tutorials_audio_harmonies"

...and it did a really good job. (I transcribed the audio to the Soloist track.)

In Realband...

1. Open the Audio on a track

2. Select the whole track

3. Select "Edit | MIDI | Pitch to MIDI Convert"

The MIDI transcription will appear on a blank track called "Conversion from track x" where x is the track number of the audio.

Realband conversion offers greater control over interpretation parameters.

Regards,
Noel

There are a few rules that you must do in order to achieve a good vocal to MIDI conversion regardless of what software you are using. Like John said use a single sound like do and la. If you are using Melodyne then pitch correct the audio prior to conversion.

Also do not use and any effects on your vocal, i.e. no reverb, delay etc. Do not use slurs or vibrato as conversion software has a problem with them. You can add them in MIDI if necessary.

Your vocal should be as pure as possible and even then you may need to do a little editing in MIDI.

I would use Melodyne for this as I have had some great audio to MIDI conversions with it. I have used it for bass and guitar with success.

I hope this helps and good luck.

This one looks interesting but I haven't tried it - costs but has a free demo trial.

Caaron,

This could also be useful...

Here is a blog article from Joanne Cooper where she explains how she uses Melodyne to convert her vocals into MIDI.

Exactly what Mario said! I have used melodyne with great success doing this. Even using the actual sung lyrics. You do have to do some editing in the piano roll to get it right but the more you do it the better you get. Now it takes me only a few minutes to edit the midi in the piano roll to get it sounding good.

Edited: just seen Noel’s post. Thanks Noel!

Wow, so many great suggestions to try.

I did try the BIAB and RB test last evening and seemed like maybe I could make something work.

I am also going to revisit testing with Melodyne. The problem I was having there was, somehow, I was getting WAY too many notes. I would need to figure out why that happens. Basically it was jumping around a lot. I will test with a consistent sound like "do" to see if that improves anything. Thanks for that suggestion.

Just all the way around "Thank You" for the many suggestions. I had NO idea there would be so many options.
