I am just curious thoughts here on foley arts. I figure with the number of people on the forum and give the nature of it; chances are some of us have even tried your hand at it.

I typically have two thoughts of it.
1-My general feeling is when it's done well; it's great!
2-Most of it is not done well.

So I very much appreciate it. smile

I really like to see how they made foley stuff in "Making of" videos. Like how they made sound effects in Star Wars, etc....

Thanks for saying something. I thought foley had been brought up in some for on the forum before. I probably should have said a bit more about it being sound effects in tv, and movies.

I do think it's pretty fascinating.

I soooo know what you mean! I remember seeing how they made the blaster sounds and had my dad drive me out to where they had some guy wires. I would have been there for a LONG time had I not got yelled at for banging on their cables. lol

I love learning about that stuff!

Making a Star War Light-saber sound is easy. On a electric guitar turn the guitar bass knob all the way up and the treble all the way down, turn the volume knob to off, strike the low E string and play with the volume knob. Your exact settings will vary depending on your guitar pickup and amp settings. My younger students loved this trick.

I disagree, mainly because I don't own or play a Sousaphone!. But can your Sousaphone do R2D2?

Ok, this thread went in a direction I didn't expect...and was hoping for. There are just some WAY cool ways people make these sounds.

Personally, I think it's pretty awesome.

I've always been fascinated on Foley arts. I remember a video I stumbled across a while back on YouTube that went into the process of someone who does sound design and background ambiance for horror films. It was incredibly fascinating, and really made me appreciate it more. They put a ton of dedication into their craft.

Cheers,
Deryk

You can do it that way, but the original ligh-saber sound effect was actual created the sound fx guys accidentally had a mic pickup the singal of a broken CRT TV.
