Is there a GM virtual synth/ virtual module that can be used with reaper that would be similar to sound canvas, is pretty much plug and play AND free. I just need something simple that can give me a reference.

I changed laptops and can't seem to get a simple solution.

Recently, I purchased VSTSynthFont that PG Music now use with BIAB64 as the default GM synth. It cost me around US$20.

http://www.synthfont.com/

While I could use VSTSynthFont in BIAB 64-bit without any problem, when I loaded it into Reaper, I was asked for a registration code. Since the price was OK, I thought I'd give it a try. It does the job. I also use Cakewalk's TTS-1. It came with Music Creator.

I find a basic general midi is all I need when I'm working on creating a midi-based music arrangement. Once I have the arrangement down, then I use more sophisticated sound synths for the final product.

Cakewalk TTS-1 is probably closest to the Sound Canvas for GM synths, but the sounds aren't as full as I remember the VSC-3 to be, for example. You can get the TTS-1 free by installing Cakewalk by Bandlab and it works nicely in the 64-bit BIAB 2019. Cakewalk by Bandlab is only 64-bit, so if you are still running BIAB 2018, it won't work. However, if you ever got any one of the previous (from Cakewalk, not Bandlab) DAW's - e.g. Music Maker, Sonar Home Studio, or some variation of Sonar, you can install one of those in 32-bit mode to get the 32-bit version of TTS-1.

Don't know if this helps you.

Perfect solution for what I needed! THANK YOU! smile I already tried it and it's doing exactly what I needed it to.

By the way, I haven't checked out this version of cakewalk. Is it decent?

I also noticed it came with some version of Melodyne. Is that an official version without expiration?

Thanks again to John and Noel for the help with this. I appreciate it very much! smile

HTL - Cakewalk by Sonar is exactly what Sonar Platinum (the top of the line DAW from Cakewalk) used to be before they sold it off, minus a number of the extra plugins and other extras. But it is not limited in any way and it really is free. Sonar Platinum used to come with a lot of extra ProChannel Plugins, synths, effects, etc. That's limited now (because of licensing as the result of the buyout, since many of those extras actually came from other vendors). But the DAW itself is still Sonar. How much more development goes into it over time remains to be seen, but right now it's an excellent DAW, especially if you already have experience with Sonar.

Since BandLab took over Cakewalk there have been multiple updates. The updates have focused on fixing many stability and nuisance issues left over from the Sonar days. The biggest new features are additional time and pitch shifting capability and integration with the BandLab cloud platform.

TTS-1 is integrated into the main Cakewalk by BandLab download file. Melodyne, drum replacer, theme editor and Studio Instruments are optional (add-on) download files. The Melodyne provided is the same trial version available on the Melodyne website. It is so severely limited I consider it a waste of time and wish I had not downloaded it. I haven't tried the drum replacer or theme editor but have them if I ever decide to use them.

I've found TTS-1 and the Cakewalk Studio Instruments (drums, electric bass, electric piano and string section) alone are worth the download. Having access to a top of the line, full featured DAW for free is just the icing on the cake.

You have to open an account with BandLab and use the BandLab Assistant to manage the file downloads.
