A friend of mine decided he would like to learn acoustic guitar. He asked me what would be a good guitar for an absolute novice. Being the drummer I am; I figured I better ask all of you! smile

He just went through a divorce to budget is a big consideration.

I know there have been threads on this; but also know that things change fast with certain instruments in the industry.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! smile

Yamaha makes nice sounding "less-expensive" guitars.

Here are a bunch (of varying brands) on sale at MF between $100-$200.

https://www.musiciansfriend.com/hot-deals?N=500010&icid=201871#pageName=deal-center&N=100802+500010+100505&Nao=0&recsPerPage=30&profileCountryCode=US&profileCurrencyCode=USD

Yamaha, Epiphone, Alvarez, Washburn, Ibanez - all decent (for what they are) in that price range.

If he is not in a hurry, he might watch the Stupid Deal Of The Day for a deal - acoustics pop up there once in a while...

Craiglist is always a good place to find decent acoustics cheap...

A good friend would recommend this instead of a guitar... grin The guitar will take 10 years before it will attract the ladies, this will take 10 minutes.

I suggest a Rondo music acoustic:
https://www.rondomusic.com/product8347.html

I have a number of electric guitars and one 12 string acoustic from them and they are all great guitars. They are quality instruments at a low price, but of course they also have more expensive guitars available.

Plenty of good suggestions. Go for the deal in a mid level instrument. Too cheap and he may not get the “right” experience with high action, poor tone, etc.

Our albums and singles are on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora and more.
If interested search on Janice Merritt. Thanks!

If he was my friend I'd have him check out the most popular local music store where he lives and look at their used ones. Take some lessons and decide if he likes it or not, then he can always trade up. Whatever one he gets, it's gonna be painful 'til those fingers get used to it. i think the originator of the saying "no pain no gain" was probably a beginning guitar player. grin

Great responses all around! I'll echo several previously made comments and spin it into a unified recommendation:

Long after the sweetness of a low price subsides, the bitterness of an inferior product remains... so the goal is to get the best price possible on a higher end instrument.

Craig's list and ebay are full of ads for "pretty good" guitars that somebody else thought they'd learn to play, but never did.

After Christmas I often see ads for new instruments given as Christmas gifts to a kid who would rather have gotten a game console.

The nice thing about Craig's list is that the sales tend to be local, so you don't need to worry about shipping damage. Plus, you can make a lowball offer (seller is free to reject it... but if the offer is made respectfully, you'd be surprised how often the person will accept SOME money today in exchange for an instrument they don't want. Immediate gratification: it works in your favor)

Awesome sauce! This REALLY helps. If I'm understanding a summary of the thread, he should look for a used Corvette on Craiglist in the $100 to the absolute most he can afford. wink J/K of course

I will give him all of the options and let him decide. Great suggestions for some new if he would choose that route; and some very strong cases to maybe check out used first. Great perspectives!

Thank you so very much everyone!

IF he goes the used guitar route make sure that an experienced guitarist goes with him. The guitarist would know what to look for, i.e. bad frets, warped neck, etc.

Hard to go wrong with $200 Yamahas. Guitar Center’s store brand, Mitchell, is actually quite good. I have a 3/4 scale Mitchell that sounds way better than Baby Taylor’s and nearly as good as the Little Martin LX1. I paid $10 for it used. Prior owner had stickered it and painted it. I spent an evening cleaning it up and now it’s my travel guitar, with some tan lines from the stickers and paint. It’s a solid spruce top guitar. That’s pretty key for a decent sound, or Martin’s Formica tops. Now that colder months are coming, I will be doing more recording and I’ll try to feature this little guy some.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
