(Lyric philosophy.. some may want to skip it)
Music has a way of amplifying our emotions. If people already feel rage, and you write a rage-filled song, it can have an effect much like throwing gasoline on a fire. In that sense, playing to the stereotype can be very powerful. But there is much debate about whether or not violent music is socially responsible, or whether it promotes the acting out of rage.
Music can also open doors that lead us to reconsidering existing opinions, emotions amd life choices. When we write songs countering the attitudes that lead us in bad directions, it can have a stabilizing effect on the listener.
This song honestly states that living in the projects sucks. The central character is tired of it. It neither glorifies poverty nor encourages the poor to kill the wealthy. It victimizes nobody. The acknowledgement of discomfort is the beginning of motivation, and I think that's a good message to send.
I neglected to say earlier that I really liked the many clever approaches used in this song! Rharv, your musical creativity and mastering skill is very impressive. Manning, your vocals are very good! Kudos to both of you.
as stated by other posters, these are just my opinions. Nobody's opinion overrides anyone else's. Liberty exists when people can put their stuff on the table openly, and people can comment on it openly, and none of them are penalized. I hope we always have this kind of liberty

your third para is exactly what i wanted to convey.
and i didnt want to get into stereotypes.
my grandfather
(who had his share of lifes struggles and fought in ww1 and lived in east london uk..)
used to say "it takes all sorts to make a world".
even in the poorest areas there was a lot of
camraderie and people helping each other in many different ways.
i can remember as a kid growing up in london for example
on my grandmothers street. there was an unwritten rule.
if a family lost jobs or income the hat would be passed around in the street
and people would chip in to help them get back on their feet sort of idea.
with the understanding when they were back on their feet in turn they would help others as and when the situation arose.
even the toughest of the tough often had golden hearts from my experience.
giving money etc etc to some poor elderly frail person.
there are many facets to the multitude of social ills in the world.
i saw them all growing up in london.

Hey Manning!
I think the lyrics and delivery are too hopeful for the subject matter. But I have heard many of your songs, and you
are a generally cheerful, upbeat guy.
If it accomplishes what YOU want, then it is fine.
Let's be clear here...I could never have written "Happy Days are Here Again". We all interject our perspective in our lyrics.
I tried writing a love song, once. Once. Then I wrote something about Hurricane Katrina. More in my element. Pain and suffering!!!!
Do what you enjoy doing, and keep writing!

you are correct i like to be happy n cheerfull.
thats me to a T.
n basically have fun whatever the singing genre.
ive sung in the past in cathedrals, R n R bands, punk, metal,
and gilbert n sullivan n lots of other genres.
in summary..some folks like doing up old cars.
me..its fun doing songs and singing.
whther comical or serious songs.
my approach to doing songs is very simple as follows.
(and i believe a healthy one cos ive seen too many songwriters
tear their hair out.)
whether my own or other folks songs ..i follow certain rules.
1.i try n do the very very best i can with any song.
i give it 100 per cent.
2.but at the same time i dont let the song consume me out of
all propoirtion and take over my life...balance in life etc etc.
3.i accept that often i fail but sometimes i might have
hopefully the occasional small successes.
4.if a song just isnt happening (in one of my own songs)
then thats often a clue to me that mebe my song idea isnt strong enough.
my other clue from haveing done a few hundred songs over the years
is if i need too many traks i start to question once again my song concept.
5.i put my efforts out there , and if i get arrows in the back
i accept that without fear cos it comes with the gig.
6.whether i'm useing junk gear or great gear..
i use whatever is on hand.
and finally my last rule.
HAVE LOTSA FUN IRRESPECTIVE.
and thats moi in a nutshell..just a party bloke..lol.

Yes, that came through in the song to me. I'm glad to hear that my impression was what you intended to convey.
On a similar note, I want to echo your comment above in light of Mooheads comment about the kind if music he would write: "it takes all sorts to make a MUSICAL world"
Part of what I enjoy on this forum is seeing how different people in different places and different situations seek to express themselves musically. People post songs I would NEVER have conceived in a million years, mostly because they see life differently than I do. I can only experience one life... but by hearing other peoples songs, I briefly experience your lives too, and THAT... is extemely cool!

yes we are on the same wavelength mate.
there are many ways to communicate in lyrics of course.
in this case i decided to take a medium road rather than going too way over
the top about the topic which i felt might offend some listeners.
its difficult at the best of times given this topic.
and ultimately , lyric wise i dont think there is a definitive solution
that will keep everyone happy given the subject matter bout social problems.
how my lyric mind works in a creative sense is also often a mystery to me.
ive tried to analyse how and why i come up with certain lyric concepts..
whether happy or sad without conclusion.
all i can say is the lyrics just seem to flow in me from the music.

This style of lyric delivery has a well respected pedigree. On this side of the Atlantic, Rambling Jack Elliot talked his way through much of his reperatoire, as did his protege Bob Dylan, and C&W icon Johnny Cash.
Manning's performance dredges up pleasant memories of folk artist Donovan Leitch, and punk casualties, the S*x Pistols. Schweet!

the pity was when i did the vocs twas xmas n people were
interrupting me every 5 minutes, and my siamese cat that likes
to jump on my shoulder at the most inappropriate times..lol.
but was fun to do.
now i wanna do a hard rocker next.
fyi ..one of my fav songs of all time is david lyndleys version of mercury blues...
love that song. i wanna do a rocker like that some time.

...this could be arranged... I have the bass, drums and guitar covered, and I work with one of the best lap-slide/harmonica players (Tom Eberhardt)who ever drew a breath. A certain Bob Harvey can rip up the keys like nobody I know.
Plus, there are a few production/engineering maneuvers I've been itching to try (as long as you don't mind a little Linux action in the mix...  )
Sound interesting? ...hmmm...

that sounds very interesting mate.
i love electric slide as on lyndleys songs.
well actually i just love slide etc etc .
particularly slide duelling with an electric guitar in a lead break
at a good upbeat rocking tempo.
i really like the tempo that lyndley used on mercury blues.
and the way the drums just storm in right at the start of mercury blues.
they just perfectly lay the hammer down..lol.

download n see what i can do lyrically n vocally.
n you can tell me if the vocs/lyrics suck or not.
