I have a Behringer Xenyx 1002 mixer. My mic is placed in the XLR input of channel 1. Channel 5/6 goes to the output of my pc sound card. Left channel of main out goes to the line input of my pc.

When I try to record vocal to Band-In-A-Box, the pc output is also being recorded. If I turn channel 5/6 to zero, I can record the voice, but I can't hear the music to sing to.

What have I connected wrong? How do I need to set up my mixer so I can record my voice without also recording the music?

Thanks.

I just had a quick look at the manual on the behringer site...the easiest way to accomplish this is to plug the FX SEND into the input of your sound card, and not connect the monitor outs.

then set the level of the signal being sent , by adjust ing the channel FX send level and the master FX send level.

Be aware, that the FX is going to be post fader. Which means its level will go up and down with the main channel volume fader (knob in this case) .

This type of FX send, post fader, is usually used for effects, like reverb and delay etc where you want their mix (balance of wet to dry of effeect to main signal) to remain relative as you adjust the main channel fader.

The other type of FX send, or send , is PRE fader. Which would be ideal in this scenario, or if it was being used to drive a headphone mix, or live monitors mix for a performer.

sooooo................8)......

If you plug your microphone into the XLR of channel 1. Leave you PC audio outs ,in channel 5/6 as they are, connect the FX send to input of sound card...and plug your headphones into the XEnYX headphone jack...you will be good to go...and will have some monitoring flexibility....just remeber to check that you arent clipping the input of the sound card, when you are ready to record, and the level, will be controlled by the FX send.....and that level can change, if you change the channel level....post fader and all that...8)...you will see after only a couple of minutes exactly what I am talking about...

cheers

It will all seem like voodoo at first. I spent a few hours messing with my first small Behringer mixer, and got it to work. A week later I forgot what the heck I did and took another few hours, and I think maybe an hour the third time. I now keep a notebook on settings, slider and pot positions, buttons etc. It can get a tad more complicated, for in my rig I have the keyboard out to the mixer, the keyboard with midi thru the computer and out to a Ketron SD2, AND, a mic in. So you had to change stuff and use headphones and wanting just to put in the vocal track for example, or balance my keyboard with that and record into band in a box..then try it with Audacity, then I got a power mixer which was huge and confusing, and now both those mixers are on the shelf and I have a Bose Tonematch thing ma bob, and that is a usb to the computer and once set up it was quite, well, intuitive compared to other stuff, or I learned a bunch.

Lots of guys here do the audio engineering end of things. I more like the guy in the bar playing the piano with my foot tapping to provide the click track.

And once the 6th decade dawns on you the learning curve seems steeper and you get out of breath.

I use a Behringer 1204FX Mixer, and I think the main advantage is, it has a BUS Channel (ALT3-4). I can group a few Channels together and send them to this BUS. The Mixer has a SUB OUT which takes the signals from this "group" and sends them to my PC via the TASCAM Audio Interface. The other tracks playing in BIAB on the PC come to my TASCAM (USB) and then out (via LINE OUT) to a separate Channel on the MIXER. This way there is no feedback and I can hear BIAB and yet only record the instrument(s) I am playing...

I control the record level using the faders of the ALT3-4 Channel, and I control volume of the BIAB tracks (that I am listening to) using the Mixer's MAIN faders. The sliders/faders on the channels I have my instruments plugged into are set at the MAX level.

There's a great Website with more information about Mixers and everything else regarding recording http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm and has a great section devoted to Mixers (check the Right margin) http://www.tweakheadz.com/choosing_a_mixer_p2.htm

Good Luck

I have a similar workflow to John, in that I keep track of what is plugged into the mixer
and what the controls are set to.

However, instead of writing it ALL down, I just grab the digital camera and take a quick
"zoomed in" snapshot. Then when I re-position the plugs or change the knob settings,
I can always look up what things were set to before.

Now I just have to write down which snapshot worked the best!

Good luck!

Thanks for the input. However, after I configured the mixer the way you suggested, the record audio is still picking up the BIB music. I also cannot hear my vocal in the headphones. If I turn down the FX send on either the channel or the master, both the mic and the music are muted. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

Hi

double check your connections...

Your mic goes into Channel 1. Your computer outputs go into (i think you said) channel 5/6.

The input (lets say left input) of your sound card, is connected to the FX out of the Behringer mixer.

Your headphones are in the behringer mixers headphone input.

You set the FX send level for the vocal, to set the input level for recording on the sound card.

You turn off the FX send level for the channel(s) that the sound card comes into (i think you said 5/6)...this way, no music is being sent to the computer card inputs.....as there is no music being sent along the FX send...just your voice....get me?

you set your monitor level , of your voice and the music you are singing against...by the channel volume knobs....

The FX send, sets the level to be recorded....and the channel volumes set your headphone mix...

remember, that I explained the FX send is POST FADER, so when you adjust the channel knob...you will have a corresponding change in volume on the FX send...so its a couple of quick adjustments...

if you want, I am available now...and I can call you on skype if you like and talk you through it....

cheers

Thanks soooo much for your patience Wiz. I must have connected something wrong the first time. Went back after your last post and tried again and works like a champ. Many thanks!!!
