Like my Senn 600's, the Drop 6XX is open back. Personally, I prefer this to closed back phones as it gives a much wider listening field and more "openness" to the audio image. That said, open back phones are for very quite critical listening areas where outside disturbances (AC units, dogs, kids, etc) are minimized. On the other hand, I can always hear when lunch and supper are ready!
