I'm working on a project that I need that classic video game sound...think 70's and 80's.
Does anyone know of a vst that has some of these sounds?
I found 2 so far. 1 is $149 AND you need the FULL version of Kontakt. lol So, looking for options.
Thanks in advance.

Picking might be tough... However I am very sure you can find sound in SF2 format mapped to keyboard and use VSTsynthfont or similar for playback. I am not sure if BIAB version of VSTsynthfont will work in DAW (outside RB..) but on bright side, VSTsynthfont VST is cheap enough. Brief search: https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts?tags=videogameI am not sure about the copyright side of these, you have to do your own research. In any case, I think SF2 format will be the easiest to find in this genre.

Thanks in advance. Google/Bing free video game sounds and you will find a lot of them. Also if you go the soundfont (SF2) route then get the free TX16WX: https://www.tx16wx.com/You can load SF2s directly into it, i.e. no conversion necessary as in SFZ.

An alternative method is to use an effect called a "bit crusher". Game sounds were 8 bit audio for a long time. A bit crusher converts regular 16 or 24 audio to 8 bit or even lower.

Wow, you are stretching the memory here, but I'm pretty sure I found the old Nintendo soundset as SF2 and also for Roland S series samplers. The sounds were indeed 8 bit and the sampler versions were 12 bit , so you may need to do some work converting formats if you find these. Vienna and/or S-Sampler come to mind as being tools I used back in the day.
I started looking for them locally, then realized they were likely on floppy disks .. so long gone here. Shouldn't be hard to actually 'sample' them if you know the desired sound and have something that could trigger them.
I'm pretty sure I can play the old Zelda games still and get the samples .. but if you are talking Pong, well that's another story. You mentioned 70/80 era .. in 1970's things were pretty dang limited and proprietary from my memory. I'd guess you would need a way to trigger these. Or maybe a retro-game could suffice in this aspect. (?)
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Oddly enough I was watching this video on LMMS a free open source DAW. (Not that it would suit my needs) . This DAW might be just what you are looking for to create Nintendo sounds. (Or many other aged devices). Look here and see for yourself. https://youtu.be/odQG4TaQ0JQHave fun Tony

several VSTi for free. I have a couple of them. I know the Computer Music magazine cover DVD has one in there as well https://cymatics.fm/blogs/production/chiptune-vst-plugins

Get MAME and record the output of any game you like. Do a search for MAME Roms.

Wow! So many GREAT avenues have been presented. Thank you SO very much for the responses. I've been messing with soundfonts. I've had and used TX16WX for a while now. I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of that. I also found some killer VST for this type of thing. Basically, I've been working on an original song/jingle that needs to sound like a video game theme for a client. So, it's more than just sounds effects...but those obviously help as well. Pipeline-I have VERY familiar with MAME and have "lost" many hours to it. Ah to be young again.
