I see people use many pictures they didn't take in videos. I'm just curious how do you know if they have a copyright if it's not obvious?

Hi I think you are talking about what licence the picture or photo has.If it has a "commons creative" licence then its free for anyone to use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_licenseHere is wiki on creative commons . For instance I looked up commons creative on the Titanic to get pictures and I downloaded pictures from Pixabay that people allowed you to use ,Hope that helps Hugh

I would do an google image search for the photo in question first. That would be something hard to prove I would think.

I would hazard to guess that most people using other’s photos on their videos don’t really care if the images are copyright protected and also, by this time if the owner of the photo hasn’t learned how to protect their image that they really don’t care too much about it either.

All the stills and most clips I use are public domain from wikicommons or pixabay. You can also get stills that are royalty free which just means you pay a one time fee from just about anywhere. Just search for royalty free images. For the film clips that are in Girl It's Gone, I contacted the filmmaker and have his written permission. Years ago on that one I had a copyright notice over the clips but it wasn't from the original filmmaker - it was somebody else who used his work in their video. So I disputed the claim and since I had his written permission I won.

We use stills from a variety of PD sources. Pixabay is the best IMO regarding quality and variety.

Yeah, copyrights are a thing with pics too.
In fact, I don't recall the name of the company, but there are folks, whose sole job is to cruise the internet checking websites for unlicensed, copyrighted, pictures. they turn their finds over to the legal dept and they send out letters demanding money or else..... and it's all totally legal. Kinda like the napster mp3 sharing thing did with the music kids were sharing.

I have many battle stories on this topic, but my basic advice is - only use an image for as long as you can prove you have rights to do so.
There are leeches out there praying on image use, but there are also reputable sources.
Not my job to enforce whether someone has the rights or not, but if I'm going to use an image myself, I know I need to be sure I can prove a reputable source.
I've had to negotiate for website owners that thought it was OK to use any image they saw on the internet (until Getty came calling). Trust me, phone calls negotiating with Getty are no fun.
I've also experienced people getting images from a legitimate free source that was later bought out by another company that waited a couple years .. and then came after the client for using 'their' image for 2 years. They wanted payment for 2 years use at their desired rate. (yeah, no)
It can get ugly; try to be safe out there. <grin>

This makes me want to steer clear of using pictures completely. I don't have the ones I'm looking for and am not looking to pay for them. It's not that pictures are not worth it. I'm just not going to try to track down the number of sources of the pictures I like to do so.

There are a number of royalty free photo sites. Most of them just ask that you give credits to the owner.
I've used some of those and yep... credits were given. My song/video Merry Christmas from Kandahar was a prime example.

Didn't mean to scare you .. but if using an image commercially (whether a video or website) make sure you have proof of purchase or source. One source we use is Adobe, which comes with a generous amount of free images, but it is a monthly cost. Just in case you didn't know; if you have a recent Photoshop (or other Adobe CS*) subscription/license, it likely allows access to thousands of nice images. https://stock.adobe.com/ (type music recording in the search for an idea of the vast options) Come to think of it, I need to point that out at the studio .. we got CS there, and others there may not realize we get a lot of image access with it via Adobe Cloud. Could make a big difference in product imaging (web, packaging, adverts, etc) If you need images, $30 a month for Adobe stock may be a deal on it's own. As I understand it, you retain rights after cancellation, so it's a cost-per-image decision if you want to join/download/cancel. 10 images for $30 .. or 40 images for $80 .. pretty affordable for quality images. Just trying to help

A "reverse image search" is a good way to find out the origins of an image. I think dragging an image into the search bar in Google images usually does the trick. Since others are suggesting good sources for free-to-use Creative Commons images, I figured I'd hop on that train and post two of my favorite sources. I use the Prelinger Archives a lot, especially for video work I do. I think they're a great organization, and they have some really fascinating stuff there. I love looking through all the old educational videos and cartoons they have, there's some really useful footage to be found. Plenty of it is Creative Commons, and you can specify "Only Public Domain Materials" when making a search. They recently added quite a lot of images, so it's worth browsing through some.
