When you mentioned metronome, I had originally presumed you were referring to the count-in. Now knowing what the style is and listening to it, yes, the rim-shot (side-stick) lacks the same realism as the snare hit.

There is also a lot of reverb on the drum kit which affects the rim-shot, and I don't think that helps.

Try setting the reverb on the drums track to about 6 and see if that improves the rim shot sound. No guarantees...
