You are absolutely sure that you had the same ASIO driver selected in BIAB on each computer in that video you took?

No, the driver is WAS on both machines in that video.

The ASIO driver causes white noise / crackling (like a momentary loose cable connection)
every so often.

Some ideas - Right-click on the speaker icon in your task bar, and click on Sound Settings. Then click on Device Properties, and then "Additional device properties". There are two areas you should take a look at. One is the "Enhancements" tab. You should compare this on both of your PC's. If you make any changes, restart Band-in-a-Box after pressing Apply. Next, check the "Advanced" tab - try setting it to Exclusive mode, and reboot Band-in-a-Box again to see if it makes a difference.

I did a lot of testing / stuffing around.
I set the audio drivers to ASIO Realtek in the BIAB Audio driver dialog.

Now, BIAB will no longer run.

It starts and pops up a window with the message as per attached. That message is not closeable. I have re-installed BIAB but it is the same.

How do I get it to work again??
Or how do I change the driver back to WAS outside of BIAB?

You can manually revert to factory settings by going to your bb preferences folder (usually c:\bb\preferences), and renaming the following two files:

Mysetup.dk
intrface.bbw

Then right click on your BiaB desktop shortcut and select Properties | Compatibility | Check 'Run program as Administrator' and click apply. Then double click on your Band-in-a-Box icon to launch the program.

Thank you. It was the intrface.bbw file. I am up and running again.

Question:
Are these ASIO , WAS and MME drivers only used by programs like BIAB ?
I am not able to find any google reference on how to change these settings in Windows 10 outside BIAB.
?

Yes, they are used by audio programs, and they are selected and if needed, changed (buffer number) in each audio program.

BIAB can generally be run on MME with no problems. ASIO is a standard created by Steinberg but now used by other companies. ASIO drivers are written by the manufacturer of the audio interface, so they differ in quality and effectiveness. If you have a good ASIO driver, though, it will function better than any other choice.

Yes, much like your printer drivers; they are only used by applications that access the printer.
Your audio drivers are only used by applications that access the audio device.
That's a very basic analogy but true.

In W10, going to Settings and clicking the Audio listing in the left column should reveal Input and Output selections that are available for W10. (or you can use Control Panel - Sound for a different view)
Same thing happens if you right-click the speaker icon in lower right and select Open Sound Settings.

Getting a system set up correctly is half of the battle.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

ASIO Realtek is the wrong driver to use with a behringer interface - you need to use the behringer driver. did you ever get round to testing the behringer interface on the old laptop as described earlier? ASIO Realtek is probably the driver for your onboard sound.

just a bit of basic explanation - forgive me if you already know this. drivers are litle programs that make hardware work - your printer has a driver and so does your internal soundcard and your external audio interface.

MME is an old fashioned Microsoft Windows driver that works perfectly most of the time with BIAB for playback with internal soundcards so its the 'safe' choice. Trouble is if you want to record audio with MME there's a 'lag' so your recording and playback are difficult to get in synch.

WAS is a newer Microsoft Windows driver that usually works fine with internal soundcards and does not have the lag problem you get with MME so you can record audio in perfect synch.

ASIO is............. "ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output), developed by Steinberg, is a cross-platform, multi-channel audio transfer protocol that is being adopted by many of the manufacturers of audio/MIDI sequencing applications. It allows software to have access to the multi-channel capabilities of a wide range of powerful sound cards."

in plain english it's a dedicated type of driver designed to be the ideal solution for music making and sound production. however it's a type of driver and not all asio drivers are the same. every manufacturer makes its own ASIO driver using the same standard but designed to work perfectly with its own kit.

that's why the ASIO Realtek driver is different to your Behringer ASIO driver. Just the same as an Epson printer driver is different to a Canon printer driver.

and you choose the driver to use with BIAB within BIAB itself. and bear in mind that BIAB will send the music it generates to either your internal soundcard or your external audio interface. MME and WAS will be your internal soundcard (and if its a REALTEK chip it seems you have a REALTEC ASIO driver but that seems to create problems so its best avoided) when you haven't got the behringer plugged in. If you plug the behringer into USB you should use the Behringer ASIO driver but we don't know if the unit is faulty or not.

berntd,

Losing all your program settings doesn't have to be a pain in the neck even though going through all the settings takes time and attention. Band-in-a-Box can save your settings and restore your settings.

Navigate to: "Options" > "Save Preferences As ..." to open a dialog window to save your settings as a preferences, or BBW, file.

Navigate to: "Options" > "Open Preferences File ..." to open a dialog window that loads a preferences, or BBW, file.

I've found using the preferences file is a big time saver.

Hello friends,

Another weekend and still no luck.

I am now trying the ASIO4All v2 driver out the headphone socket of the new laptop.

There is no audio. I get the following message in BIAB:

I have tried restarting and even setting the options to NO MIDI driver. It remains the same.

I am getting less confident that I will ever get BIAB to work properly.
This really takes all the fun out of making music :-(

I've reread the whole thread and there are some unanswered questions.

Did you use the same driver on the old and the new laptops for the behringer interface. Andrew asked that question and you replied that you used WAS drivers on both laptops. You also refer to the Realtek asio driver and now you are using ASIO4 all. yes or no did you use the same behringer asio driver on both laptops? if you did the behringer unit is not faulty.

also have you ever tried MME drivers which don't seem to have got a look-in anywhere in your posts. yes or no have you tried MME as the audio driver on the new laptop through hte laptop headset output?

obviously you need to use a style with RealTracks if you do not select a midi driver.

if you tick the box for dxi/vst synth and choose Coyote WT the free synth you got with BIAB you should get reasonable midi if you are using midi tracks and it should work flawlessly with MME.

we are trying to help but we can only eliminate issues with your answers.

if you try MME drivers and still get the problem via the headset output it does seem to suggest that you are might be getting feedback from the laptop mic. if youtube and mp3 files play fine through the headset output, we can rule out an environment/special effect setting for your onboard sound setting. yes or no do mp3s play ok?

sorry if this all sounds a bit aggressive, i'm only trying to help but these questions keep nagging at me trying to suggest a way forward. i'm sure answering them will also help some of the real experts here suggest a solution.

The Behringer does not come into this last post at all. I would have prefered to create a new thread for the last post I made above but others keep saying I should not. th ethreads get too long and people can't follow.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTION:
I have tried all the different drivers (except MME ) to try and get this working.

I DID NOT INSTALL ANY WAS DRIVERS SPECIFICALLY. They are what came with the machines or BIAB or wherever they come from. I have no idea if they are the same WAS drivers on both machines. I doubt it.

New laptop:
Behringer unit:
Behringer ASIO driver produces crackling like a bad contact every so often (as
described). Not usable
The WAS driver produces muffled audio on the Behringer.
ASIO4All produces the issue as per last post above.
Currently no satisfactory audio from Behringer with with BIAB on this laptop.
Youtube, mp3 produce same muffled sound quality.
Unit produces rubbish / random loud white noise when plugged on. This only stops when
audio is playing through it.

Headphone socket:
Bad audio.
Dell has provided new drivers and a method to try and improve the audio.
The audio now has a ultra low frequency flutter (like someone waving a fan) in it as if
they are turning the interface on and off at a rapid speed.
All audio, including Youtube and mp3 have low frequency same flutter issue.
Realtek ASIO as well as ASIO4 All drivers are problematic as mentioned above.
No usable audio solution at this stage.

Old Laptop:
Behringer unit
Behringer ASIO not tested (I may have but can't recall).
WAS driver produces good sound.
No other driver tested.
Youtube and mp3 play same quality as BIAB. Ok.
Unit produces rubbish / random loud white noise when plugged on. This only stops when
audio is playing through it.

Headphone socket:
WAS driver produces magnificent sound.
ASIO4All produces great sound but there is no volume control via windows.
MME produces great sound but it has lag for real MIDI piano operation
Youtube and mp3 produce fantastic sound.

Behringer drivers installed from the same Behringer .exe source file on both machines but the actual drivers are different as as one is for WIN7 and the other for WIN10. No further details known.

I need MIDI AND Realtracks at the same time since I use the melody and solo tracks to play piano.

What is the solution? Is there any chance to get this working still?

Regards

Bernt

we are still talking at cross purposes. there are not two behringer drivers. windows 7 and 10 ASIO drivers are the same.

https://www.behringer.com/downloads.html

the driver number is UMC Driver 4.59.0 (for Windows 7 to 10)

ASIO and WAS drivers are different. If you are using different drivers for the Behringer on the laptops and one works fine and the other doesn't then maybe the problem is you are using the wrong drivers. If you can get the behringer to work you can use the dedicated behringer ASIO driver, RealTracks and midi using the Coyote soft synth included with BIAB. Then you will have everything you want.

If you can use the behringer it cuts out the new laptops internal soundcard if you select the right driver in the driver window of BIAB.

so we are still no further on getting the behringer to work. if you pm me with an email address I will send you the behringer driver. it's a zip file but there is still only one driver for both 7 and 10 in the zipped folder. then you can follow the walk through i posted above.

as youtube sounds bad as well either the laptop is faulty or there is still a setting somewhere that is wrong. did you buy from a store? if so take it back. but if you can get the behringer to work it bypasses the laptop's internal sound and as i said above you will get everything you need to work the way you want.

That is the exact source I used on both machines. But as already said, after running that, the Win 7 shows a different filename for the Behringer box under device manager/driver thn the Win10 machine. So the driver file in that link is a package that actually instslls/contains multiple actual driver files and it installs what it sees fit OS dependant.

I am not sure how else I can say it but one more time: The Behringer ASIO driver produces crackling like a bad contact. Yes, Behringer specific ASIO, from the driver link you mentioned. Not usable.

New Laptop is Dell 15 7000 2in1 which cost $1560 from Dell. I am in contact with them but they know nothing about what we do here.

Here is a link to another video, showing the Behringer noise problem.NOTE: That is NOT related to the issues above but also pretty crappy.
Behringer noise

Does that help at all?

I haven't been following this thread closely so if this is redundant then I apologize up front.

The Win 10 system sounds bad but the Win 7 sounds good. You have noted above that the same driver package yields two different file names and maybe drivers. Have you tried running the driver install using compatibility mode in the Win 10 system. That should emulate the Windows 7.

I am puzzled that the driver exe file installs a different version having detected the operating system but i'll take your word for it. the name of the unit in device manager shouldn't matter if you choose the behringer driver in BIAB. device manager shouldn't come into it.

Frankly if youtube sounds bad as well as BIAB and the behringer unit works fine with the behringer driver on the old lap top I'm out of suggestions.

Up to you but frankly in your position I'd give up, insist on a refund and buy another make of laptop.

it really shouldn't be this difficult. regardless of BIAB requirements if you can't get youtube and mp3s to sound right, that's the line to take with Dell. they can easily claim that BIAB is a problem and not help but if mp3s don't play right they can't escape the fact that the unit is faulty.

Yes, it appears that a lot of rubbish is being sold today for heaps of money and they seemingly do not care much if it works 100% or not. I guess that has been factored into their business model.
