It all makes good sense, the only remaining issues I have are:

it seems that the involvement of FastSpring triggered the need to handle VAT, is it their decision or is based on legislative requirements which surely differs between markets?

Also the responsibility is handed over to a third party to handle international taxations deriving from the sales of your products, i.e. transparency may run the risk of being compromised.
