I've just tried this with 2022(912) and it's now mostly working.
The obvious remaining problem was the greyed out second half of each bar, so I looked a little closer and saw a "beats 2" in the MusicXML file, because the song is in cut-time. I changed that to common-time and the file imported as expected, so I think there's a small bug with a workaround.
I've reported that PGM.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
