Soundfonts have an advantage over the TTS-1 as there are many different SF2s available. Also you can make your own GM SF2 by changing some of the patches. For instance if you don't like the sound of a trumpet you can change it using a soundfont librarian.

The TTS-1 is a good GM sound source. I just wanted you to know that there are other excellent options available.
