Isn't it so, that chord notes and scale notes are the same.
Stack thirds on thirds for a "Big" chord and you end up with all the scale notes spread out 2 Octaves.

I know of a use case for such a distinction, when relating to a given triade (eg. C E G). For melody there is a technique that has formulars for chord notes vs leading notes and how to use them. For this example C E G would be chord notes and D F A and B would be considered leading notes.

But this is a moving target, as the colouring would change with each Bar.
