Can someone answer this question for me?
I cannot find a simple answer on the internet (anywhere!)

I have a Scarlett 8i6 (1st gen).
There are 3 green lights on the front (which have always been lit - I believe).
Currently, the middle light - the USB connection - is NOT lit when I plug the unit it.
And the device does not show up (anywhere - Device Manager, Studio One, etc.)
The top light is Power (it lights), the 3rd light is LKD (on).
Phantom Power (red) comes on when pushed.

First thing I need to know:

Does the USB green light come on when you power it up? ...meaning, without being connected to the computer?
Or does it only light once a connection has been made?

This will help me know if the unit has failed
...or if it is a problem between the unit and the computer.

Backstory:
I've been having issues with the unit since the hurricane.
We had one power outage (which we've had plenty before).
Before I shut down (to ride out the hurricane), there was a Windows (10) update that I allowed to run.
Since then, I've had issues with the unit.
Recorded vocals are distorted.
Once in a while, all the sound (from Studio One) drops volume levels by about 80%. There is then odd sounds (electrical? hums, pops, weird noises). Then more odd noises and the sound comes back.
Yesterday - trying to solve these problems, I updated the driver. I had been running 4.65... - the new (current) driver is 4.102...
That seemed to help some, but today (out of the blue) I've got NO sound - no connection.

FJ,
Are you sure it is not related to PC USB port?

If you have a secondary interface a good idea to try that. Another thing that comes to mind is that it is powered by AC adapter. Can you test it, if it got juice? Some interfaces that "can" be powered by bus, would show signs of life, but would not be detected by PC if they do not get external AC power.

Good luck.

I do not have a secondary interface.
The unit is powered via a power supply (plugged in). The USB light on the unit is the only thing not lighting.
That is why I need someone to tell me if that light comes on simply by powering up the unit.
(None of the Focusrite documentation tells me if it should come on when first plugged in - without computer powered up or without the USB cord connected to the computer)

FJ,
Just a simple test... I know it is plugged in. What happens if you unplug USB cord. Will the lights still be "on" on Focusrite?

Try a different USB cable?

Just trying to help.

Hmm ... I have the 8i6 3rd generation, which may well behave differently, but on this the USB indicator comes on only when my PC is on. It does not come on at all if there's no plug-top power.

The light is off no matter what.
I need to know if that should come on simply by plugging the unit in.

I tried a different cable. (I'm only assuming the 2nd cable I tried is a proper cable)

Gordon - I think that is what I need to know

"...if there's no plug-top power."

I'm not sure what that means. "plug-top power"???

Hi Floyd,

I tried to use as non-country-specific a term as I could, as terminology varies, but clearly that didn't help. Sorry.

The external power supply.

A "plug-top" power supply is the thing that plugs into the wall and supplies to the 8i6 some lower voltage than the 110 or 230 or whatever comes out of the wall. I've also seen them called "wall warts".

I hope that's clear.

Yes. Thanks. ("wall warts" - indeed).

I believe that I have determined the problem is the USB port on the Scarlett.
I booted up my old Windows 7 machine where I used the Scarlet originally.
(It took a VERY long time for the machine to "settle" since it hadn't been on for several months).
Got the same results - the USB light did not come on.

I then connected an Alesis Q49 via the USB cable that the Scarlett uses.
The Q49 connected (and loaded its drivers). So that worked. Not a cable problem.

Interestingly, when I unplugged the Q49, I plugged the Scarlett back in - and the light lit!!
I transferred it back to the Windows 10 computer.
It lit up. For a minute or so. Then went off. Then came back on. Back off.
I can SOMETIMES get it back on by jiggling the cable (seldom works, though).

Best guess is that it is a bad USB port.

Yeah, try different a port or a different USB cable.
Focusrite is known for being fussy about the cable and support docs suggest they'll only support their own cable (which is only about 1.5 ft long so not acceptable in some applications, including mine). The supplied cable worked but was too short for my needs.
I tried a longer cable I had laying around and it failed.

I bought a nice new decent quality 15 ft cable that wasn't the cheapest but solved the issue ever since.
JSAUX 15FT USB 2.0 Type A Male to B Male Cable
I got the gray one FWIW, but was only about a $15 fix ..

We got another of the same for the studio (same situation; too short of a supplied cable with 18i20) and the new cable has worked fine there too.

Just saying, the fact the cable works on another device doesn't mean it is fine for the Focusrite application.
Unless I missed something.
A cable that worked fine for a printer/scanner did not work on my Focusrite, but didn't mean the cable was fine for the Focusrite application. It was still indeed the problem. And jiggling it could be making the cable kind of work for the moment, but ultimately the problem could still be inside the cable itself.
At least that has been my experience.

*Edit:
Now that I think about it more, the USB cable that failed with my Focusrite is still in use on a Roland Synth for both MIDI and Audio .. so the cable working on a different device (synth) does not always mean it won't fail on the Focusrite device.

This caused me a bit of distress when I first got the Focusrites, but ended up an easy fix

There are many services that replace USB ports. Usually $40-$50. I would try ebay.
Something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/331108036497
You can see their true feedback history from real customers and it is somewhat secure because of ebay's protection policies. You can ask if they can repair Focusrite.

My son pulled a charging cord on his wireless JBL speaker and broke USB port. I was uncomfortable doing it myself, so I bought a service from one of these guys on ebay. Turnaround was less than 2 weeks from sending it.

P.S. Something you can try (AT YOUR OWN RISK!) You said that you can jiggle it at in comes on for brief while.
It could be that the port at solder points got detached or there is poor socket to plug connection. You can try deforming cable plug about 1mm, so it makes a tighter connection to see if it helps. *Again, at your own risk! smile

I think somebody answered with more words but yes, until the USB port sends power to the interface it will be dark. Just like if the driver ever takes a dump and it doesn't light until you reinstall the driver. (Which I have had to do on my 2i4 a few times.)
