When I decided I wanted to take music lessons I went out and bought a series of books from Mel Bay on music theory and found a music teacher who agreed to teach me based upon those books. After 3 lessons he told me I should stop taking lessons from him and just start following the lessons in the books. I did.

Was it a good idea? Beats the hell out of me.

After the second lesson it was obvious that I could play rings around the teacher and understood more than he did about music theory after just 2 lessons. I still just claim to know the basics about music theory but it just made sense after a couple of lessons.

It ain't frickin' rocket science. It's the ability to use simple math and to have an ear for what sounds good.
