you use the 1/8 note as the beat or the 1/4 note .. or occasionally 1/2 note for marches and similar (time sig 2/2 oc the 'C' with a vertical line through it). Sometimes the easiest approach is to just set the tempo in the application and listen whether the song sounds right or is madly too fast or too slow, then halve or double to suit.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
