Hi New to this forum and music recording. I'm using Ableton 11, Melodyne 5 assistant and Nectar 3 plus.

When trying to create a song in a daw from scratch. Should you use your own vocals and try to get a good mix on them or use samples?

I'm trying to create a song from the vocals first?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Alan.

ive done too many vocs in the years in big n' small studios n' home rigs also…lol.

heres how i approach a song fwiw today rather than in the old tape based era.

1..get arrange in good shape eg in biab or rb. and then get 'guide bed trak stereo mix'.
(note try different keys in bb/rb chord sheet viz your vocs singing along to find best key.)

2..get 'guide vocs' down eg in rb or another daw singing with ' guide bed trak mix' .

3..now for the icing on the cake…i go thru' every single pg rt soloist to find the best 'sound nuggets' that fit the song//tart up/finalise arrange.

4..lay down finals ie my final vocs plus add some iceing from a midi kbd triggering sounds if song needs it...
etc etc. and other doodads eg if song calls for added rhythm i add my gtr.

thats the core of it. for further info as it would be a v long book like post if i went into more detail theres lots of info on the net.
for example 'doubling vocals' can be a powerfull method.

(note ive done it both ways...recorded my vocs with n' without samples depending what i felt the song needed.)

it would help to know how you use biab (and rband if you use it also.)
as there are lots of 'tricks' in laying down vocal n' instrument traks in biab n' rb.

hth/happiness.

om

I am not exactly sure what you are planning. But it sounds like you would like to lay down the vocals first and then have the band play (synch up to) to the vocals. That sounds a bit crazy. For timing purposes you would want the band to play first and then sing the vocals over the backing tracks. Just sayin...

Since you didn't mention Band-in-a-Box I suggest that you buy it.

When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"

That.

Otherwise, there is no single approach.

I started in the 1960s using Sound on Sound on AKAI tape recorders brought back by Airmen from overseas posts and graduated to SelSync on tape machines at AMPEX where my dad worked. Yes, really.
