I haven't upgraded to Win7 yet but I'm thinking the time may be coming. My first focus is on retaining XG voices for my Midi.
I prefer Yamaha XG voices. My current audio card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with the Yamaha DB50XG daughter card attached to the waveblaster connector on board. Running under WinXP3, 2.4 G Proc quite well.
The last TB WDM drivers were WinXP. So if I migrate to Win7 (32) it is likely I will no doubt have to stop using the TB Card and the XG daughterboard . . . or at least the XG daughterboard.
So to keep using XG sounds what are my alternatives besides keep on keeping on using Win XP - fortunately I don't have GAS. Lol. So the simpler the better but with XG. I am finding out though that RTs are replacing some of the voices for which I purchased XG.
Some combo of Yamaha sound module and basic sound card??? Can I do this without a keyboard?
I have an old Roland keyboard controller A-30 and a guitar controller GK-2A and a GI-10 interface for External Midi In, but would a something like a Yamaha MU90 module be suitable for External Midi In and Out XG voices? Could the old TB Santa Cruz be used for just audio (XG daughtercard removed) in a Win7 computer. And 'yes' money IS an object.
Any Thoughts? Thanks. Ian

Most yammie modules that have the general midi soundset (XG) will sound at least as good as the card, and probably much better. Not familiar with that particular model you mentioned though. You should be able to connect a USB-MIDI convertor and run the module from BiaB/PT. Audio tracks would then be coming from a second device, do you have a mixer to make things convenient?
Is Win7 going to be on a new machine? If so you would need to make sure you get PCI slots to even consider using the old card, but I bet drivers will be a long time coming (could be wrong).
You may want to stick with XP for a while yet...
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Hi Bob Don't imagine there will be new drivers as the card has been discontinued. I've kept it because of the XG hookup. If I went the module route then I would be looking for a clean audio card. The mixer I use is the Tascam Portastudio 488 but I record to the Computer. I was actually thinking that I might be better XGs if I moved to more recent XG hardware like the sound module - might have said MU 128 which was released in 1998 - still XG voices but lots cheaper than say the MU2000. The issue then becomes just a new soundcard if I go to Win7. If I look at it practically, my current XP rig with more RAM will probably do all I ask, and outlast my hearing to boot. Still - it's nice to have the info - thanks

I've had to stay with older Operating Systems in order for my stuff to be compatible. First started with Win98 and all the software and hardware that I'd invested in that was not compat with XP. Eventually, though, I had to "bite the bullet" and set up an XP DAW in which *some* of my hard-earned money investment had to go away.
BUT - the upside of that was a good thing in the long run.
Yes, purchase of an older Yammy full-fledged MIDI hardware module might just be the ticket for you now.
Another route to consider -- I have noticed over the years that the biggest hurdle to overcoming a new (to me) MIDI solution is actually located between my own ears. Once I take the plunge to a different solution, it generally takes but a week or so of listening to the new one and I adapt to the point where I don't necessarily like "old faithful" anymore. YMMV

Ian, I've always been impressed with Yamaha sounds, especially at the price point they're marketed at. For less than $200US, can you buy a Yamaha keyboard, like the PSR-E413. http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Cont...amp;CTID=205100Click on the Audio tab right above the picture and listen to what this thing can produce. For a few dollars more, you might want to step up to the PSR-E423. If those prices are a bit too high for you, check out the YPT-310. Check out Musician's Friend for other Yamaha Portable and Arrangers to see what else is available. There are a lot of good keyboards for less than $200US that will probably amaze you with their sound. Gary
I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Try Craigslist and E-bay for sound modules. I don't think any manufacturer are in a hurry to write new drivers for older gear or soundcards.
I have been using my trusty Tyros for a while now with Vista & Yamaha Audiogram 6 here. So far, so good !!
You should be able to find a sound module someone is trying to get rid of, hopefully.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have no problem staying with XP3 for the music computer and the XG Daughterboard until PG forces an upgrade of OS. Turtle Beach has always had good clean audio and they have a couple of Win7 compatible cards to replace my current one. I'll probably start prowling the buy/sell lists for an older Yammie Sound Module - the Motifs are just too much for my needs, and I am not a keyboardist.
My use of the XG Sound Module would be solely for better guitar/string voices for lead parts - particularly in the acoustic area. Some of the PG midi generated lead parts are very good, but if there was a sudden birth of Acoustic Lead Guitar RTs, then I could see myself doing away with midi sounds altogether.
Cheers to all - Ian
