This song was inspired by some nasty things a friend is dealing with when a racist, sexist, homophobic, redneck bully moved in next door.

The Band:

2667:Pedal Steel, Background DreamySingleNote Ev 075
2637:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm CountryBentNoteBalladJohn Ev 085

I'm playing all the guitar parts and used ezDrummer3 for the drums and percussion.

Marty Straub from BabuMusic is playing the bass.

Bad Dream (2024, Dave Bell)

Three steps forward and two steps back
how did things get so off track
Life was good, or so it seemed
then things changed, like a bad, bad dream

Why do people still have to live in fear
judged for for what they believe,
and the people that they hold dear

The more things change the more they stay the same
ain't no way to win in this losing game
Like a spider in it's web always being there
evil remains, just has a different name

The guitars and the mixing are superb. The vocals sound good. With the neighbors it can quickly be hell.

Another great collab, kudos to all involved.
The only small improvement needed is 6 more dB on Marty wink

Perhaps these lyrics from Steely Dan will encourage your friend.

"When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you"

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Great tone on that vocal and everything else.
The song reminds me of something Chris Rea would do.
Nice one.

Dave...man I thought at that intro that I was listening to an Eagle's tune...reminds me of "Long Road Out of Eden Eden"...which I love...your vocal is really cool in this one...and the guitar work is exquisite! mysterious and compelling lyric so fitting of the musical palate.

Dave, super tune! Toxic neighbors will take a toll for sure. Cool, compact lyrics. Love the grinding arrangement and the build to the big solo. Great tone on the lead guitar, as always. Nice vocals and bass as well. Mix sounds super, too.

Excellent work throughout. Lovely playing by you and Marty. Enjoyed the vocal.
I got the Long Road Out Of Eden vibe in the intro too.
Nice work.

Great song about a very tough subject. Awesome vocals and mix. Love the guitars and Marty plays the perfect bass parts (as always).

Well, a 6db increase on Marty would make him twice as loud as he is now, so I'll probably not do that grin But I know what you mean, he has a knack for playing the perfect part and his lines are always a pleasure to listen to.

Thanks for checking out the song!

Dave, I like this about as much as anything you’ve done. Great vocal and the guitars always stand out. The mix is right and it is very well written with no need for more. The message gets across loud and clear. Excellent work, Tom

Ah, you already know, Dave, so I'll comment to others --haha, and restate it here so you won't think i was just blowing smoke when i said, I like the guitar between verses and the vocal is mixed perfectly out front. Very impactful video, Dave. Billions of people should watch it. I love the words that are hitting my eyes as the solo hits my ears. Excellent choice. SO good, Dave. What a great song. I really enjoy how you talk with your guitar. Well said. And, as always with songs you sing, the hook stays in my head.

Usually when someone suggests turning up the bass --well, it's usually me. But in this case I also disagree with Steve --well, especially about the 6db. smile

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi, Dave.

Everything works here. The mix here is excellent, and that solo rocks.

Nice. laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Dave, you are one hell of a guitarist. You're so good it is scary!
Great lyrics, mean neighbors can be a PITA.
Marty's bass is solid as always.
FWIW I think the vocal could be a tad louder.
Super song.
