Trouble In Mind

Trouble In Mind has been described by The Blues Foundation as “one of the enduring anthems of the blues as hope for the future even in the darkest of times.” It has roots from spiritual songs dating to the 1800’s - the “modern” smile version dates to 1924. This is our little three minute take on it. Thanks to PG Music, our music partner PeterF and if you listen we appreciate your time and comments.

It is public domain worldwide and we own all rights to our version
Janice Merritt: vocals, arrangement and mix
Bud Merritt: mix, arrangement, mastering and photo (real Janice and forest smile )
Peter Fulham: guitar solos/fills and arrangement
PS This is a complete rework of a version we posted 10 years ago.

Vocals: Rode NT1 > Nectar (EQ, slight compression & light plate reverb)

Bass: RealTrack 2435 Direct Input New Orleans Shuffle > Logic Pro 60’s Combo Bass Amp > Waves Bass Rider

Rhythm Guitar: RealTrack 2436 Direct Input New Orleans Shuffle > Logic Pro Amp Boutique Retro Clean

Piano: MIDI SuperTracks 2258 Rhythm Country Shuffle John > Logic Pro Studio Grand > Waves Unplugged > Ozone 11 imager

Drums: RealDrums Blues Rock Shuffle > Waves CLA Drums
Several fills were comped, added cymbal and little tag created from the BiaB kit file.

Mastering: Ozone Equalizer, Ozone Stabilizer, Ozone Impact, Ozone Imager, Ozone Dynamic EQ, Ozone Maximizer > Izotope Tonal Balance > Logic pro Loudness Meter

Trouble In Mind
© Trad. Arr. 2025 J. Merritt, B. Merritt & P. Fulham
(1924 Richard M. Jones)

I feel like laying my head
On some lonesome railroad line,
And let that 219 train
Ease my troubled mind.

Trouble in mind, Lord I'm blue
Honey I won't be blue always,
The Sun's gonna shine in my,
Shine in my back door someday

I'm goin' down to the river,
Gonna take me a rockin' chair
And if these blues don't leave me,
I’ll rock on away from here

Trouble in mind, Lord I'm blue
Honey I won't be blue always,
The Sun's gonna shine in my,
Shine in my back door someday

I'm all alone, I'm alone at midnight,
The lamp is burnin low
I never had so much trouble
In my whole life before

Trouble in mind, I’m blue, now,
I won't be blue always
That wind's gonna come,
It's gonna blow my blues away

Yeah, that wind’s gonna come
It’s gonna blow my blues away

Janice & Bud,

LOVE this version!

That opening sequence with Janice singing acapella is stunning... Her phrasing throughout is extraordinary. This aspect of her singing is what really sets her apart from a lot of today's vocalists - she has such a distinct and deeply embedded vocal approach for this type of music. Really special.

Peter's guitar is supportive and full of personality. Great tone, vibe and swing as always.

I love the production of this piece. It has a contemporary and vintage feel all at the same time. Hard to do and no one does it like Bud.

AWESOME!

Janice, you get better with each song. How is that even possible? smile

Peter: BEAUTIFUL playing. And the arrangement is superb.

Bud: you are so great a producer, we don't even notice you at work smile The sound sounds so natural ... it's like, why doesn't everyone sound like this, production-wise? smile

You already had me with the a Capella intro.
LOVE what the piano does, and as always, Peter is THE man who knows when to play and when to shut up.
Perfectly staged by the one and only Bud.
Super!

Thank you Bob. We typically write our thanks together but I (Bud) am gonna say a few words about my better half who is very, very modest. IMHO Janice is akin to a method actor in that she lives and breathes a lyric while developing her vocal and puts her heart and soul in her typical one take and then moves on. smile floyd was the first person to mention "living with it" to us. That all makes your vocal comments even more special to us.

OK back to the two of us smile We both are lucky to have Peter as a music partner and his knack for supporting a vocal is something we have long appreciated. And thanks for mentioning the production. We both like blues, older blues rock and some of the modern blues rock so we are happy you heard that!

The phrasing & melody of the title is pure 40s...
An incredibly cool revision of a cool song - the guitar quoting melody and filling just the right spaces is classic in tone too.
Fab job all through by all of you...lovely polish Bud!

J&B and Peter:

Always a treat to hear one of your productions . . . like the production choice on the opening . . . you know the music is going to kick in and the anticipation adds gravitas. Great guitar playing that sits so well in the mix. Excellent work all around!!

Hey, you three,

What's there to say? The song speaks quite nicely for itself. A vocal that fits the style and feels like a hand-made work of art., A master guitarist, and the best knob twister whose work I've had the privilege to hear for more than a decade. Does it get any better? Nope. Well, not unless ya'll do it again.

Mesmerizing and so satisfying. It made my day and my evening. I can now relax the rest of the night and enjoy the solitude of my little office.

I was gonna say, "This is great!", but it's better than that. That word hasn't been invented yet.

Alan

Thanks for the very positive review.
Your vocal and guitar comments are greatly appreciated.
\Janice constantly smiles but your comment made it even bigger. smile

Glad you liked the intro -- always striving for something a little different with these 100 year old tunes.
We much appreciate the piano mention as we worked a bit to get it "right." Love those MIDISuperTracks.

Peter is THE man indeed and thanks for the mix comment.

Thanks Ray. You mentioned all of the goals we hoped to achieve. The tune has been done by folks from Louis Armstrong to Janis Joplin so we hoped to do something create a tiny slot we for our version.

Clicked on this post and the first thing I saw was Scott's (Ezekial Storm's) comment saying he loved that a cappella opening. Man, Couldn't push the play button fast enough. Thanks, Scott. hehe Peter what a great, tasteful sound. You always create the best part for the piece. This song is so much fun to play, and you show it. Janice, has anyone ever told you you sing these Blues better than anyone who ever opened their mouth? You're the best. And how cool is it to have Bud, the master craftsman and the controls. Superior job, you three.

Hey this is great! I really like the way it was recorded. It has an old-timey almost "discovered treasure" lost recording feel to it, from from back in the Lost Delta ages of blues recordings!

smile

Very nice all around with the typical awesome vocals and fantastic instrumentation.

That wind has blown your blues back to us again and what a pleasure it is to listen to this spiritual. Janice's solo in the beginning is really mesmerizing and I would gladly to listen to her without the band for hours, she's the brightest sunshine of this forum. But the band is great also, the piano creates a nice old saloon feeling and Peter's guitar adds electrifying excitement. The mix is excellent, what else I could expect smile

Now that's the blues! Janice's vocal stylings are in top form once again. Peter's touch and tone are the perfect compliment. Of course Bud's deep understanding of sound engineering complete the trifecta of excellence. It just don't get much better than this!

Tom, it’s great to see you back on the forum and, man, what a supportive review. You are a blues man, a fine singer, a great instrumentalist and a very, very high bar engineer/producer and all that makes your review very special to us.

Thank you!

Best to you and yours.
Hope the thumb improves.
And stick around!

Hi J&B and Peter.

What exquisite listening! smile I never get tired of hearing Janice sing and Peter playing his guitar. Making first class, professional-sounding music just seems so easy for the three of you. The opening a cappella verse was an awesome arranging choice. The most powerful songs I've ever heard are those that launch straight into the song without any explanation or introduction, and they usually begin a cappella. Only the very, very best singers seem to have the confidence to do that. There is no doubt about it at all, Janice is in the upper-echelon of the talent hierarchy.

I absolutely loved this!

Boy what a cool groove Janice. Peters guitar was excellent. Love those double stops. Excellent mix and master Bud.

Hey Noel, apologies for being late responding. The forum has been quite busy of late.

Thank you very much for the kind comments. We agree about the “straight into it” beginnings. We also like them and have done three or four over the years. This was a fun project and as an admirer of your productions your thoughts are very special to us!

I immediatly thought of "Key to the Highway" when I heard your rendition of "Trouble in Mind" so out of interest I checked with Wikipedia which states that "Key to the Highway" was first recorded in 1940. So it would appear that "Key to the Highway" stole "Trouble in Mind".
But anyway, superlatives escape me when it comes to the brilliance and beauty of your productions. To quote Billy "And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say man what are you doin' here?"
Oh, and my compatriate Peter ain't no slouch either!

J&B,

Love the vocal only intro! No instrumentation was needed there! Janice carried it quite nicely as well as the rest of the song!
Great treatment of the old PD song!
Nice guitar fills with the perfect sound for this!
Bud mixed up a great recipe of ingredients for the final wonderful sound!

Take care, TB

Interesting observation. Also I just realized they are both 8 bar blues arrangements.

Thanks for the time to listen and write such a supportive review.

It’’s much appreciated.

After a long break, it was a pure pleasure of hearing music performed by one of the most vibrant teams in PGM world.
Excellent interpretation that still holds main recipe magic. Perfect guitar playing and stellar vocals. Mix is PRO.
Enjoyed and thank you for sharing.

Misha.
