Usually caused by Audio Driver.
What are you using?
If external (as suggested in the error(Undefined External error") - was the interface turned on before you opened PT?

Or possibly, is it in use by another app (some other music app open and using it?)

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Yep, generally caused by the audio driver. Go to Options > Preferences > Audio then set the driver type to Windows Audio or MME. If you generally use ASIO, it's best to only use it when recording and when all other audio apps are closed, as ASIO drivers tend to lock themselves to one app at a time.

In my PC I use the Soundcraft MTK when recording, however it's not active in this case , be working in Windows some Seq's done before.
So , in my PC Windows have Creative RX5 soundcard, and in my Laptop Intel drivers, which are mainly by Windows managed, I use Windows 11.

best to post pics of your ptw audio driver settings.
otherwise difficult to help.
also use a proper asio sound interface.

see my tips in pg tips forum re optimising a pc for music production plus sound devices people use.

hi there

From my Windows PC here down are those driver that are using , in this case only for extra playback.
Mention that for recording I use the Soundcraft MTK (audio-midi).
By the way , let me know through a link about your recording tips in the forum.
thanks

lobster.

here is the link you wanted.
lots of my tips in the pg tips forum.
various threads...

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=31&page=1

frankly even for just playback i wouldnt use pc sound chip in a pc.
good sounding interfaces are dirt cheap....
under 100 bucks.

eg one of many...

https://www.amazon.com/ESI-Neva-Uno-Professional-Interface/dp/B0BMM3MHYV?th=1
59 bucks.
if you decide to get the above make sure you test it once you get it. typically amazon has a 30 day return policy.
see the net and you tube for reviews of the above ESI.
there are also other under 100 buck interfaces.
eg behringer.

just an idea.

That window is showing you the MIDI drivers - could you show us the Audio drivers? They're under Options > Preferences > Audio, then click on Drivers.

Also, right above that button is where you can change between Windows Audio, MME, and ASIO - in general we only recommend using ASIO while recording, as it can conflict with other apps.

Thanks for the link, I will check it.
Actually my gear is not what it' shown on the picture.
I record strait from my Soundcraft MTK 12 , Multichannel . I'm organ player.
My gear : Studiologic NC2X, Roland VR09, Alesis SR18, Yamaha Reface CP, Ferrofish B4000+.
Because I record to my old Laptop, Midi would be shown I kind oflag, however audio is ok.
That's why I check, separating the audio tracks, the midi tracks , moving those to a another PC , which don't have
connected all that gear, purely simple, because I really need those midi for getting the score, in case would have to remember the played notes. Naturely the soundcard Creative, that I have it's not so special.

The error is happening in both, the Laptop recording (MTK) and the PC with Creative.
Of course the audio drivers are those of the Creative on the PC, which are using Sound Mapper and Speakers(Sound Blaster), see the attached file.
As you can see for testing my midi , in this PC I use MME and Coyote for sounds.
You I have now disable any audio driver other than the Creative ones.
In this PC ,is also other software installed, like : Ableton, Audacity, PerformeLite, but I don't use them, by now.
I mentioned , in case where any interference somehow.
This error, pops-up, and closing them, PTW4 works normally, is annoyng anyway.

Lobster.

i'm confused...i thought awhile you had the mtk working fine ?

SO you have 2 pc's...one useing mtk and one useing creative right ??
please confirm the above.

lets take one pc at a time.

FIRSTLY in ptw mme you have 2 outputs selected.
try this...select creative audigy ONLY and use move to top command.
does this work ? IE ONLY HILITE CREATIVE AUDIGY.
IF DONT WORK >>> heres what i would like you to do re the pc with creative.

1..with NO MUSIC APP LOADED...play a song in windows.
does it play back and you can hear it ??
if so...
2..load up audacity and import a audio file.
does it playback once again in audacity ?
IF SO...
3..NOW go to audacity preferences and note the audio driver settings
for the creative AND in ptw preferences set THE SAME DRIVERS as set in audacity.
haveing done that do you get your error problem in ptw ?

frankly as i said if were me i would get a cheap audio usb interface.
i never get problems.

btw i find your setting graphics a tad 'fuzzy'.

om

I second this - try using only one sound output at a time. It's possible that both sound devices are set to different sample rates or otherwise don't want to synchronize. As well, I'd suggest selecting something as an input - the Line In should do for now, or Microsoft Sound Mapper if that's what you use as the output.

On your other computer, try selecting only inputs 1-2 and outputs 1-2 and see if that works. If not, try switching driver type from ASIO to MME or Windows Audio.

Don't get confused!, I'm sorry
There is not intention to do that, would be a lost of time!!
The fact is that , all audio funtions , in all software that I mentioned!, and on both ,laptop and PC.
There is not an audio problem!
Not even a midi.
There is something that I don't understand, which is not logic.
Something to do with a software, or Windows ....................
I have 4 PC's, including the laptop, and will install PTW4 in another of them , and see if any shows the same anomally.
What is also to mention, is that during a playback of a midi file, if try to change the volume moving the slider on the software, not in Windows, pop-ups again the same message shown at the start of my post.
At the stage, I have been suspicious of a kind of malware, but my PC's all have ESET full internet security installed, and checked with others, there are all clean.

Well, it's not about audio itself, which I wrote before to Justandolduso.
Playing a simple midi file on PTW4 using the simple soundcard drivers.
All other audio funtions, as playing videos or any recorded sound , in Windows player,VLC or any.
What for me, still remains a doubt, is the fact that a recorded sequence , which includes in my case audio and midi, and that for checking the midi, I do remove the audio recorded tracks and save the sequence as midi file, 0 or 1 , could cause that error, which is poping up there after saving the file, and replaying.
What is your thought?, makes sense?
other reasons, wrote about malware, I don't know.

Doesn't matter if it's a MIDI file, PTW is expected to turn that MIDI into Audio or it's pretty much useless data.

Lobster.

i'm extremely confused as this now seems to be other problems ?

so heres what i suggest.

post ptw song *.SEQ somewhere on the net thats causeing the error on your pc so the rest of us can run detailed tests on it useing our pc's.
ensure the SEQ contains both a couple of audio tracks and midi tracks.
then we can see if we get the same error popping up as yourself.
also pg support can also look at the song seq.

this way it will save a lot of guesswork and many many posts trying to help you.
hope this makes sense as i, for one, am very confused as to whats going on regarding your system. but maybe i'm dumb...lol.

happiness.

Well , I got surprised as using my second PC,which has the same Creative soundcard as the problem one, shows the same error.
I did uninstall the driver, and installed new from the original CD; but Windows won't accept it, and trough Windows update reinstalled the driver.
The thing is that the problem persist.
I did removed the Creative sound and let the sound driver from the Mainboard (AsRock-Intel) install.
Now the pop-up error show before is gone, also moving the volume slider (mentioned), not a problem anymore.
[color:#3366FF][/color]

For me is also confusing, its anyway your assumtion clear about sound drivers.
I don't know , why oder app. using the sound card driver Creative, including Windows don't are showing those errors.
For me remains, to find out why is in my laptop, which don't have Creative driver, only Intel
My laptop in Acer Aspire 5734z, not a new one.

read what I wrote back to rvrhv.
I'm also confused, like you.
I have to find out.
But did heard, about removing the audio tracks, and saving the seq with only midi data?
What its opinion, have these some influence on, error maybe?
Let me know.
