A later 1929 recording by Bessie Smith became popular during the early years of the Great Depression due to the lyrics highlighting the fleeting nature of material wealth and the friendships that come and go with it. Since Smith's 1929 recording, the song has been interpreted by numerous musicians in a variety of styles. In my version I sing and play guitars and banjos (tenor and plectrum). Another gem from the good ol’ days! I liked the approach you took on the arrangement, esp the sparse interlude to highlight your banjo strumming. I don’t know much about vocal effects, but at the beginning, I’d like to hear your voice a bit clearer. Good work, thanks for posting!

Thanks and again I'm more and convinced, that I shouldn't use so much vocal fattener delay and reverberation to hide my weak voice.

Neat rendition & fun listen. Opposite, don't hide your vocals, bring it more upfront and I think drums and banjos could be scaled back a bit. Thank you for sharing.

Rusty is right on here, this was a great rendition and don't hide your voice - feature it and cherish it. I am betting there is a lot of character to bring out there. If you're not sure how to mix your voice then put up the backing with the vocal for the master mixers here in the forum to show you how.

Thanks a lot to encourage me with my vocals. I've tried all the tricks I know: doubling the vocal track and spreading it to 15 % to left and right, short delay as vocal fattener, reverberation, unisono (singing twice the same a little bit different), even singing in harmony ( harmonizing with pitch shifter sounds unnaturally) and RealTune. I have to sing tens of times with a pilot melody track (usually vibes or organ). I know how I should sound, but can't just produce that voice, partly because I'm over 70 now. I haven't been the singer of the band, but now producing my songs all alone I have to sing. I still try to prove my natural vocals and not go to any AI vocals. For myself is the limit, that I use BiaB Real Tracks for the instruments I can't play (drums, bass, strings, keyboards, horns etc.). So thanks for your support.

Oh, I've played and recorded this one many times, but when I saw here that you were doing your rendition, Arri, I knew I was in for a real treat. Wow, this is so good, man. Love that arrrangement, and your banjo delivers exactly what I hoped for.

Brno, I know how you feel as I have a problem with my singing also.
Just bring you vocal more up front and maybe just add a touch of reverb and compression.
Great rendition of an old classic.
An after though. To make it sound more from that genre maybe sing through an old time
megaphone?

Brno, nicely done. Very authentic to the period: I expected to hear the rumble and pops of the needle on the record grooves. As you know, the recorded vocals of this period had little-to-no FX as we know them. I agree that any FX you add fights against the otherwise excellent recreation of a nice period piece, so...being out there vocally without a safety net feels scary, but it's the right thing to do, and your music will grow from it. Enjoyed your tune!

Thanks. Mario: I've tried once to cut the vocals frequency range leaving only the mid-range to sound like a megaphone, but I'll try that once more. Thanks for the hint.
