Greetings Forum Friends

Mid winter, the season of introspection, finds me in a philosophical but playfull songwriting mood. I've pushed some boundaries here – potentially into the realm of "what was he thinking?" 🙄

The track is "Dust (memories) and Desire (to find peace)" – basically, my musical attempt to finally get over myself and find some zen. (Spoiler: still working on it.) 😏

Now, I'm well aware this track is likely a work-in-progress-in-progress-in-progress. It probably needs a re-tune, a re-mix, a re-think, and possibly a complete spiritual cleansing. So, if you're feeling benevolent (or just have some excellent ideas), please fire away! All input is welcome, even the kind that starts with, "Have you considered a different hobby?" 😵

Warmly (and nervously), (◔_◔)

Izzy

Izzy, this is quite lovely! Love the opening piano section, but truthfully, every section unfolds into something cool and engaging. Super composition and arrangement. LOVE your vocals and your real keyboard friend is quite talented. Just a great tune, artfully executed and produced.

Hi Izzy! Even without listening, you deserve points for the artistic thread title!

A magnificent song - I love a good 3/4 song, and this delivered. Lots of texture changes underpinned by a consistent yet varied melody, and slowly building, building, a false ending and a rock guitar outro. Brilliant! Your piano friend added good parts as well - they iz a really seriass player.

The theatrical nature of the song and your great vocal was in the same vein as a song by the late Chris Cornell ex Soundgarden) ‘Nearly forgot my broken heart’. That’s meant to be a compliment.

Okay - you say you might do some tinkering, but it’s excellent - almost in sight of the finishing line I reckon.

Andrew

With all the caveats, I wasn't expecting something this good. Loved the piano. Vocals are great as usual, I love it when you occasionally let just a tinge of a scream into your voice, what a great effect. Really good stuff!!

Very nice.

I'll mention the things that really stood out to me and caught my attention. The piano intro. The entire song was really captivating from the 2:20 point onward. Up to that point, the song was good but after that point it switched gears. The piano in that part, the vocal and harmony, and the drums in the final section were especially tasty to me.

Wow! I think the instrumentation, arrangement and production here is amazingly good. I'll leave it to others to suggest ups and downs, ins and outs and this way and thats.

Wow! First that intro was so moving. Second, you played so well with dynamics here. The swelling, the instrumental choices, the pause...really nice. Peter Gabriel like in parts. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the harshness in some of the harmonies due to their electronic nature, but needs must. Awesome piece!

As for getting over one's self and finding some zen, pretty sure all the ego can ever do is "work on it".

As for the hobby, stick to it. You've got talent. Thanks for sharing it here.

Just seeing the title displayed as you do, Izzy, makes it obvious that this guy is different and very creative. And the demonstration of creativity is exponentially increased the more we delve. DANG! That piano break is outstanding. I love the whole dynamic prodcution, Izzy. Brilliant vocal and harmony. What a wonderrfully creative song. You call the song a work in progress (or were you refering to youself?), but, man, I can't think of how you can improve it.

Enjoy whatever happens!

No spiritual cleansing necessary, I think it's a pretty good and interesting song.
The piano interlude alone makes it worth listening to already.
Interesting, almost theatrical dynamic changes.

Hey Izzy,

This is incredible man I really love this.

It sounds a whole lot like Peter Gabriel, who is one of my favorites.

If I had only started listening at the song say at the halfway mark or three quarters the way through I could have sworn I was listening to a Peter Gabriel song, your voice sounded that close, something like Red Rain.

Like I said before man if getting all depressed and Moody makes you write great songs like this then I think you ought to stay in the bath like Robert Smith being depressed forever!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is awesome man.

Hi, Izzy.

Love the intro. It's got a great sense of space, and sounds awesome on my speakers.

In comparison, the vocal doesn't have the same sense of space, so it sounds... flat. Which is ironic, because I really like what you did with the vocal. But I would have liked it if you've figured out how to keep that depth without drowning it in reverb.

Cool sound. As others said, very theatrical.

Putting a string trio instead of "big" strings at 2:20 would have been my preference.

I'm not sure you need the high string part at 2:50. Sticking with vocals only, but adding some effects on the vocals instead might be interesting.

Anyway, very cool song here. smile

Beth,

Wow, thank you so much for such an incredibly thoughtful and detailed comment! It truely means the world to me to hear your reactions to the track.

I'm genuinely thrilled that the intro resonated with you so deeply and that the dynamics, swelling, and instrumental choices hit the mark. Hearing that it brings to mind Peter Gabriel is high praise indeed – that's a connection I'd never consciously aimed for, but I'm absolutely delighted if it evoked that feeling!

I also truely appreciate your honest feedback about the electronic harmonies. You hit the nail on the head with "needs must" – sometimes the tools dictate a bit of the texture, so it's good to know where those elements might be perceived differently. It's valuable insight.

And your insight on the ego and "working on it" for zen is remarkably astute and something I've been wrestling with myself. It's comforting to know that thought resonated, and your perspective offers a quiet, profound validation there.

Finally, your encouragement to "stick to it" and acknowledging the talent means the world. It's comments like yours that fuel the passion and make sharing this creative outlet so rewarding.

Thank you again, Beth, for taking the time to listen so deeply and for sharing such a kind and insightful response.

Warmly,

Izzy

Hello Izzy,

I've been away much of the past 2 months since my wife passed away - but starting to get back into it.

This is an incredibly powerful track with so much to like about it. The only thing I think might have helped would be a small bit of vocal reverb - just enough to know it's there. I would call it Rock Opera. Such a full production with so many variations that mutually benefit one another.

I absolutely loved the guitar as the song wound down to the end. The piano was very nicely done.

A fantastic listen to a fantastic song. Totally loved it.

Alan
