Don, I viewed these as three different songs:
1- the first was just a bed for a lead, just as you said. It was OK but not what I like in a song.
2- the second was a dynamite instrumental. Outstanding guitar chops.
3- the third was a completely different song. It was excellent.
For me it was a close call between #2 and #3 but I choose #3 as the best.

FYI - I lost 9 friends during that war. Those whom I knew all came back with serious health and/or mental problems. We buried the last one I knew last year. Thus #3 struck a chord with me.

I'm in a fitness protection program. I'm been hiding from exercise.
