Bandcamp link GOODBYE

I know it's a title that's been overused and probably used several times in this forum. I've had this one in my back pocket for a while but have been reluctant to share because I've only got one BIAB track involved. Nevertheless, I decided to share because of the amount of work that has gone into producing it!
This one was inspired by my co-writer Ron Helm's past work as a hospice chaplain and in particular individuals he has ministered to who strongly emphasized that they didn't want their loved ones worrying about them because they were ready for what lay ahead of them!

I played all instruments with the exception of the BIAB Cajon Folk Slow 8's Realdrums track which was used in the verses and first and second chorus
I also used EZ Keys for the main electric piano track and
Drums On Demand
Ron and I are both so appreciative of your time to listen and comment!

Goodbye
Torrey Bliss/Ron Helm
©2025 Glass Gate Music BMI

The sadness fades
As you start a brand new day
The sunrise comes and it takes you away
I know that time is sleeping
And slipping away
Our last breath here
Will be our first breath there

Goodbye don't cry I'll be alright
I'll wait there for you
Where we'll walk in the light

Now and then
Sometimes you will think of me
I'll show up in ways
That only you can see
Though time slips away
You'll still see reflections of me
Look up believe with Jesus
Is where I'll be

Goodbye don't cry I'll be alright
I'll wait there for you
Where we'll walk in the light

It may seem you're near the end of the road
Just know it's not the end
We're not walking alone
The Lord is taking you to
A place that we can't comprehend

Goodbye don't cry I'll be alright
I'll wait there for you
Where we'll walk in the light

Pretty good song, reminds me of someone, but I just can't figure out who.
Although you claim that you still need to work a little more on the mixing, the song is already in pretty good shape.
And your vocals and playing are really good.

Minor things I would probably look at:
- The intro is ace, but it doesn't relate to the rest of the song. I would remove it and save it for a song that it fits better with sonically.
- The vocals have a slight but sometimes distracting distortion in the high frequency range.

But, as I said, it's already very good and I like it [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Torrey,

You have a real touch with intricate and complex melodic lines. No one does it better. Love the playing, production and the way you frame the message for this excellent song. Your singing is really strong - one of your best vocals.

GREAT!

Hi Torrey,

Yes, we did a song called Goodbye many years ago. Very different than yours of course!

Love your melody lines, and that bass line is fabulous. Not too shabby on the guitar either! Excellent vocal!

Good song, enjoyed the listen!

A very nice intro, and the rest is also very good. Excellent work on the vocals and accompaniment.
I enjoyed listening to it.

Thanks for having a listen, I appreciate it! As to the intro, I'm satisfied with it! I feel it has purpose because it fits my vision for the song. It avoids a sudden harsh launch into the vocals and is a foreshadowing of the arpeggiated guitars in the chorus! TB

Cool one, Torrey. Love the vocal arrangement and the America-style harmonies/background vocals. Strong lead vocals make some tricky lines fall right in place, too. Liked the "dream sequence" opening and the long fadeout at the end. Super lead guitar fills, too.

Very polished and fun to listen to, as usual.

SMOOTH Torrey - as needed and expected given the narrative/genesis of the song.
Touches of Steely Dan perhaps.
Very cool lead work too.

Hi, Torrey.

Solid all the way through. Sonically interesting intro and outro, excellent vocals - sounds great!

Upbeat for a sad topic - good write. Strong chorus - catchy and gets the message across.

Love the harmonies. Did I mention the guitars?

So much to like here. smile

Hi Torrey!
I like the intro and outro, and your guitar fills in between. In fact, is the guitar run into the chorus a nod to ‘Hello goodbye’? The proximity of the word ‘goodbye’ to this run is what made me think.

A really good song with lots of Easter eggs in it.

Hi Torrey.

You and Ron have done a really great job with the music and lyrics. This is a very entertaining, easy-to-listen-to track. Your instrumental work and your vocals are as amazing as they always are. And the arrangement, mix and production are excellent. It is always a pleasure to listen to your contributions to the forum. Honestly, you are very talented in so many musical ways!

I thoroughly enjoyed this..

Hi Torrey

Loved the swirling opening, sets the listener up for a big number. It takes from all the best 80's power ballad genre. A nicely polished production, well and a good write. Very enjoyable, kind regards

I like this song. So much is good about it.

Just my opinion: I think you should revisit the mix. On my system, it doesn't sound clean. I went through to see that I wasn't running anything at 100% thereby causing the issue on my end, I wasn't. There is a distorted quality to the mix like you have gain staging set up wrong or have it overly compressed/limited/maximized in the outputs.... Anyway, I'd have a look at that, remove the plugs and remix it.

You KNOW I love everything you and Ron do, Torrey, but I didn't know he was a hospice chaplain. Excellent lyrics as always, and the best vocals. Love the dynamic write and all the extraordinary musicianship and creativity that made this one another special Bliss-Helms gift to the ears, heart and soul.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi there Torrey.
I think you have all the elements here but I tend to agree somewhat with Guitarhacker's comments re the mix.
There seems to be a clash of sounds. Not sure if an instrument is too loud over another or it's a frequency clash.
Could be my ears though.
Vic

Cool and ethereal intro leads to a beautiful and calming pop song with an uplifting message. I enjoyed the smooth band, and your supporting powerful guitar sounds. Great vocals and your harmonies are always delicious, high notes come very naturally. Great work, the huge amount of effort can really be heard in the production.

Hi Torrey,

When I listened to your beautiful song, a few strange things happened in my head (nothing religious or anything like that);
I heard some harmonies I knew from your other songs. Not copied verbatim, but the atmosphere was the same. I loved that.
Those harmonies have always been your strong point! Especially in your choruses.

Yet, I find the melody of this song much more complex than those of your other songs. Is that nonsense? Not at all, but it was less easy to follow or understand.
And although I read what you wrote to Brain about this, I do agree with him that your very intense intro doesn't connect to the rest of the song.
When it played, I felt a special emotion that abruptly stopped at the beginning of the rest of the song. That was a strange experience, I must say.

But all in all, this song, with that special charge, is very beautiful. As beautiful as I've come to expect from you. Praise!

Hans

Hans,

The intro is meant to be a dream sequence the individual suddenly comes out of as described in the first verse " The darkness fades a s you start a brand-new day" I am satisfied with it and will not change it ever! The mix has also been criticized by a couple of listeners, but I don't hear what they've described. I've listened to this probably at least a hundred times and I'm satisfied with it and won't be changing it!
I genuinely thank you for listening and appreciate it! TB

Torrey, this is beautiful and reminded Janice of her Mama’s last words to her, especially this:

“Goodbye don't cry I'll be alright
I'll wait there for you
Where we'll walk in the light”

You and Ron have addressed one of the saddest parts of life in a manner that is uplifting in every way.
Your vocal and instrumental performances present the peaceful mood so well.

Excellent mix.

Well done!

We have an amazing new “AI-Notes” feature. This transcribes polyphonic audio into MIDI so you can view it in notation or play it back as MIDI. You can process an entire track (all pitched instruments and drums) or focus on individual parts like drums, bass, guitars/piano, or vocals. There's an amazing collection of new content too, including 202 RealTracks, new RealStyles, MIDI SuperTracks, Instrumental Studies, “Songs with Vocals” Artist Performance Sets, Playable RealTracks Set 5, two RealDrums Stems sets, XPro Styles PAK 10, Xtra Styles PAK 21, and much more!
