For at least 2 months I've been struggling to come up with new compositions. I've nearly always got 2-4 chord structure experiments in process, but of late I've not been inspired as what to do with them style-wise once I'm finished, plus while I now have the music for 5 songs just awaiting vocals added - 1 for female, 2 for duets and 2 just requiring mine - I can't even record demos due to the limitations of where I live.
This new instrumental was pretty much finished earlier this month, but I had 2 final solos for it and I couldn't make up my mind which to use. One is electric guitar, the other acoustic, but while the electric is the better and more dynamic solo, this piece is predominantly acoustic and thus the acoustic guitar solo fit better with the vibe. I finally chose the latter - Calm Lake Acoustic Mod Jazz Solo - but as it has spaces in between each phrase I had to create a hybrid solo out of 5 regenerations to fill in the blanks (see below).
"Winter Piece" consists of two short movements, the first featuring piano, two sets of strings, plus added cello, viola and violin; the second introducing acoustic fingerstyle rhythm guitar, bass guitar, drums and organ followed by a fiddle solo and finally the hybrid acoustic guitar solo.
Piano: Pop Ballad Solo Acoustic Piano ~ John Jarvis String Quartet #1: Runaway Soundtrack Country ~ Matt Nelson Strings Quartet #2: Snow Gentle World Flow ~ Avery Bright Cello: Sobbing Cello & Nylon Guitar ~ Matt Nelson Viola: Viola & Violin Ballad ~ Avery Bright Violin: Viola & Violin Ballad ~ Avery Bright Fingerstyle Rhythm Guitar: Acoustic Guitar: Seek Smooth Panpipe ~ Quinn Bachand Drums: Country Rock Guitar Solo Pop Ba ~ Brian Fullen Bass: Runaway Soundtrack Country ~ Dow Tomlin Organ: Giddy Up Country Ballad w Organ -~ Blair Masters Fiddle Solo: Fidget Bluesy Pop with Fiddle ~ Andy Leftwich *Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar Solo: Calm Lake Acoustic Mod Jazz Solo ~ Brent Mason
*The Calm Lake acoustic guitar is a hybrid of 5 different samples as any single sample leaves spaces between the phrases. The sample was also mastered in Soren to give it lacking body, but bizarrely it amplified innumerable string squeaks which had to be muted when only one squeak could be heard on the original.

Chay, you've created some beautiful music here! You've assembled quite the ensemble with those BIAB tracks! I can surely relate to that struggle to come up with something new! That's usually when I remember to check my voice recorder on my phone for short little melody snippets that pop in my mind occasionally that I quickly record. Usually something will develop from those. This was an enjoyable listen that is well worth the time investment to check it out! Thanks, TB
Good one Chay! I enjoyed listening and looking at your graphics. Well done. Here’s hoping 2026 will bring opportunity to record vocals in your own space! Andrew
Beautiful song with a beautiful sequence of instruments. Of course, I like the strings best, which create a slightly sad mood that I really enjoy. Well done!
As others have said before me, this is beautiful. You truly are a master of instrumentation and how to create sound-flow from one instrument to another. You have an amazing ability to lead a listener along on a gently flowing stream of carefully crafted music.
This is very impressive and very enjoyable. --Noel
Chay, very sinuous and cool. The change of instrumentation at the midpoint is a pleasant jolt. The solos are nicely placed and trade off well, too. A bit of a change of pace, but still you. Well mixed as always. Nice all the way around.

Nicely done, Chay, you are a master at composing interesting instrumentals!
Thanks, Dave! I'm now praying that I can soon start doing vocals songs, but it's so hard where I live, I've now got 7 with the music already sorted, including a comical song from eons of epochs of ages of eras of yonks and yonks and yonks ago, aka 1973 when I was 22,

Lovely composition. Fine instrument choices. I really like what the cello adds to the track.
Thanks, Scott! Yep I love the cello, plus it always works well with viola and violin. In this instrumental where the latter two cut out and the fiddle solo begins, the cello remains as it gives such good grounding,

Thanks, Marty! I'm actually surprised by the good reception it's had here, plus on YouTube where it's had double my average views, but while I obviously like the peace piece, it's not in my top 30 favourites out of 44 BiaB tracks posted! I must have caught a vibe I didn't realise I had.

Lovely piece. I like the inclusion of the string quartet, which adds movement. All sections transition nicely and I like the gentle build to finish the composition.

A pleasant mix, Wao. The ending is a bit of an anti climax but I assume you will sort that. Vic
Thanks for the response, Vic. Yep, as I wrote in the main blurb, I ended up with 2 guitar solos for the finale and the electric one was far the superior, but it really needed an acoustic solo to fit with the rest. Even then I couldn't find a suitable sample, so I had to 'cut and paste' form 5 regenerations of the only one that sounded half-right. If I wasn't living in a retirement flat where I can't make any loud noises without getting complaints I'd have played my own acoustic solo.

Hi, Chay. I'm always amazed at composers who write musical scores and you do that very well. I'm more a pop songwriter with a love for catchy melodies. "Winter Peace" is certainly a variation on a theme and has lots of lovely transitions of instruments. The melody sounds like it seeks out the winter and moves through it with tranquility and varied sights. The piece is lovely and does just what it's supposed to do. John
You really created a fantastic song! The violins and all the orchestral instruments blended beautifully with the more modern instruments that came in during the song. And it is a lovely melody. A pleasure to listen to.
Hi Chay. Very nicely done! Very soothing and sweet. I liked it.
Thanks for listening and responding, Paul!

Thanks, John! Since my teens (I'm about to turn 75) I've always been more into songwriting - I began at school as a drummer, then learned guitar as I really wanted to write - but creatively I've always been into all kinds of writing, music and graphics. After self-publishing some books from 2013 I petered out on both writing and music due to getting illegal neighbours next door to where I used to live, but I continued with CGI as in some of the images in this video, then in what I call the Year of my SNAFU Catch 2022 I had to leave the apartment where I'd lived for 18½ hears and I ended up in a way too small retirement flat and I only discovered after moving in that the flat is only separated from the neighbouring one by thin plasterboard walls - had I known that before I wouldn't have moved - which means I have to use headphones for any sound entertainment so as not to get complaints from my older neighbour. It also meant not playing my guitars and that was when BiaB came to my rescue as I can compose and play with headphones on. I so far have 44 videos on YouTube, 40 of which are 100% BiaB instrumentals, the others songs using Fiverr vocalists. But even creating demos for others to sing first requires me making a demo and I very, very rarely have the freedom to record vocals as my neighbour rarely goes out and even then I don't when, so I can never plan a recording session. I've now reached the point when I'm not getting inspired re new instrumentals, so I really want to go back to vocal songs, but while I now have the BiaB music set for 7 I virtually never get the opportunity to record vocals, be they demos for others or for me only. There's little worse than getting set up and also getting into the zone, but then getting banging on the wall!

Thanks very much Hans! Amazingly, your response makes this post of mine the most successful on this forum - it's also now in the top 4 of my BiaB YouTube posts - but I say 'amazingly' because while I obviously like this instrumental as otherwise I'd never have posted it, but it's not even in my top 30 favourites out of my now 40 BiaB instrumentals! Blue Attitude Dave also once commented that it's disappointing when least favourite YT posts get more views than favourities!

Hi, Chay! Oh yes, I know about cheap flats. I lived in several of them. I had a neighbor with a loud barking dog and, here in the American west, I learned the hard way you can't complain about a barking dog because dogs are sacred as a gun or a big truck to a man. I don't know why. Seems senseless to me. But After 18 years working at the Arizona Dept. of Transportation as a graphic designer, I finally got to retire. Lora and I were in a tiny flat converted to a condominium, or condo-minimum, as I called it. But we luckily sold it and moved into a mobile home that has a lot more space and fortunately doesn't have stairs going up to the front door. Although I had always written songs since I was 21, I was much discouraged by my parents and family to do it. I married late when I was 49 against the wishes of my parents. I have autism and was awkward at interacting in society. I was often fired from jobs. I was really surprised when I shyly played one of my songs, "Far From Home," to my wife and she said it was pretty and she encouraged me to go ahead with my music. I've produced about 35 songs. Eventually, I'll get back to painting, too. Living under the present regime keeps us anxious. John
