how it's meant to be

Hope you are all well.

I havn't been around much since my old band re-formed. Building new set lists, rehearsals, repairing bruised and fragile egos (including mine) are time and energy zapping.

However the song writing bug never leaves me. This song came from "people-watching" and making up stories in my head.
I’ve always had a soft spot for couples who don’t look like they should be in a rom-com, but somehow are still going strong.
It’s about every pot has a lid, and the idea that there really is someone out there for everyone.

I was MIA for my last song but if you are kind enough to comment, good or bad, I WILL respond, Thankyou.

Izzy.

Hi Izzy!
No problem missing in action if you pop back with these gems!
I like your close mic work and no/minimalist reverb or delay - really gives the vocal an intimate feel - almost like they’re talking to each other from one pillow to the other. The higher pitched choruses are greatly supported by the mandolin coming in - something tonally consistent between the mando and vocal that I liked. The sax was a pleasant surprise also.
I note you’ve used an Ev16 style - I think those styles have a lot to offer and I’ve been exploring them of late.
Good stuff!

Very nice, Izzy. Super tune and superb vocals. The soaring vocals on chorus are spine tingling. Love the harmonies, too. The sax(?) that pops out at the end is a nice (Tonalic?) accent.

Good luck with the band! You're always welcome here, too. smile

Thanks Andrew.
You nailed the vocal effect that I was trying to achieve. I was trying to use as little reverb as possible to get that up close and personal vibe.
I am a big fan of mandolins listening to the string bands of americana music and John Paul Jones. (appologies to BD Thomas who hates them 😬)
The sax is just a generic Mixcraft (daw) patch. I think the trick is to play patches on keyboards as close as possible the style of the actual instrument.
I think the Ev16th's gives one more flexability just like using 6/8 instead of 3/4.
Thanks for your input and keep up your great creative music which I am enjoying.

Hi Ron

Thank you for your compliments which I hold in high regard !
tonalic There is a free version (which I use) that comes with Celemony (Melodyne).

"Good luck with the band! You're always welcome here, too"

That is a lovely thing for you to say. Thankyou sincerely.

The band is a lot of fun even though we are a bunch of intollerable Prima Donnas with inflated egos !!!!

Thanks again Ron

Great song, great vocals, great lyrics! The line "We find beauty that they condemn" was thrillingly beautiful. I did wish for a smidge of reverb on the vocal. And the mandolin could've been more prominent. (I like mando.) I didn't know you were a working musician. I do know how hard it is to keep a band together. Great to hear you again, was wondering where you were.

Good song and an excellent mix and master. The panning works perfectly. Lead and background vocals all very well done.

That's cool that you're getting the gang back together, Izzy. I'd like to hear you if you ever record anything --even rehersals. I haven't been able to jam in over a year, and missed a bunch of gig opertunities. Are you doing originals, too? Yes, i missed you --you're one of the guys i follow here to read what you write. Those contributions are as outstanding as your songs.

Okay. Now to this song. First of all the song pic reminds me of my wife's favorite movie, UP! What a great place to get inspired, people watching and making up stories for them. (i do that all the time) I really like the vocals. Really cool lyrics from a gifted imagination. "...kingdom from discarded parts." Yep. How it's meant to be for sure. What a wonderful band too. A sax and mandolin on the same stage. Love the whole package, Izzy.

Izzy, I'm glad you are getting together with your old band. I have had to replace a few of musicians in my wedding band because of egos. I hope you all can patch things up and have some fun together. Hopefully you will post some of your band's songs.

The arrangement of this song is absolutely fantastic. Great vocal and lyrics. I really liked your backing band and mix.
I think this is your best to date.

Hi Bob

Thanks for your kind words. Yeah, I was worried about how dry the lead vocal is but I wanted some sepparation from th BV's which also have minimal reverb.

Our band comprises a rabble of 5 old retired guys pretending to be rock stars. We have all done the 9-5 slog while moonlighting on and off as weekend warriors at all levels in various bands.
Now we all play for the fun of it and have zero interest in fame or fortune. We only play covers and if you are interested I could post our set lists. BTW the name of our band is "Viva Viagra" (nudge nudge wink wink).

I always cherish your great support Bob

best to you

Hi Vic

Thank you for your kind words.

Funny you mentioned "simplicity" because I had an idea but when I sat down with my guitar (I'm a strummer at best) nothing was happening.
Then I remembered this and decided to get back to basics.
Sometimes I need a wee "push" to get the vibe going.

Hi, Izzy.

Nice song. Basic is good.

The instruments stay out of the way of the vocals, and your vocals works well.

I enjoyed listening! smile

Hey Marty,

Thanks so much for the kind words! You’ve officially made me blush, and since I’m a musician, I’m supposed to be far too jaded and mysterious for that. 🙄

I’m really sorry to hear you’ve been sidelined from gigging for a year. I’m hoping it’s just a case of "the world’s most inconvenient hiatus" and nothing too serious health-wise! A bass player without a band is like a sandwich without bread—just a sad, disorganized pile of ingredients. ☹
I'm certain your world is a gloomier place when your gear is gathering dust. 🌼
I’m sending you all the good vibes for a speedy recovery. Don't let those bass strings go rusty on me!

As for the rehearsal, I’ve got a bit of a situation. Our main singer has skipped town for a three-week holiday so the band is temporarily a headless chicken which means yours truely has been "volun-told" to step up to the mic. I’ll be sure to record a rehearsal for you—warts and all. Fair warning: it might be more "discarded parts" than "kingdom" for the first few takes!🎤 🎜 ♫ 😍

I’m glad you caught the UP vibe from the song pic! I haven't seen the movie yet, but you’ve convinced me—it’s officially on the watchlist. Since 'How it’s meant to be' is all about finding that soul mate, I figured it was the perfect aesthetic. ♀️👵 ♂️👱 💗

Thanks again for the encouragement, Marty. Let’s hope you’re back to the gig circuit before you know it.
I’ll keep you posted on the rehearsal recording—if I survive the three weeks!

All the best,

Izzy

Hi Izzy

Showing your tender side vocally there. I've got so used to you belting out the lyrics, that this softer ballad vocal took me by surprise. Hey, I like it. Seems like the mandolin is the norm at the moment, i better get with the plan. Plus the sax towards the end, all really works well together. Great lyrically again, capturing all the nuances that relate to relationships. Such another great composition Izzy.

There was about 13 seconds of silence at the end, but i had to listen all the way to the end just in case you slipped a surprise ending or a Beatlesque reversed track to end on!!

Kind regards

Hi Izzy,

I think your song is amazing!
I knew roughly what kind of songs you make and thought it would fall into that same style, but you have surprised me (again). And now with this sensitive song with beautiful choruses.

But the lyrics are really the highlight of this song. Wow, they were truly beautiful!

I admit, I had some doubts when you started singing, but then... Amazing!!! Really enjoyed it! It's still echoing in my head...

1. SPACE in the music was the result of a brilliant, insightful artistic choice ......OR...

2. The CPU capacity on my ancient computer which hosts my DAW is so limited that brevity is my only option.

G'day K-Dub!

Glad you caught the softer side. It’s all part of my rebrand as a Sensitive New Age Guy ༼♥ل͜♥༽ —I’m officially trading the 'belting' for 'emotional vulnerability' and chamomile tea. ☕
My apologies for the 13 seconds of silence; I’ll be honest, I just forgot to hit the stop button while I was busy weeping at the beauty of my own composition. 🙄
I’ll make sure to hide a backward message in the next one—probably just something mundane like 'don't forget to buy milk' to keep it authentic. 😊

but seriously........
As always , a ton of appreciation for your ongoing support !!! 💗

Hi Hans,

You had me at 'I had some doubts'! Honestly, that’s usually what my vocal cords say right before I start singing, too. (◔_◔)

I’m thrilled you enjoyed it—and doubly thrilled that you think it’s 'echoing' rather than 'haunting' your head. 😲

Thanks for the massive ego boost today!

Marty And Mario

This is a "snippet" (it's 24 minutes) of our band session yesterday (Thursday). It comes from the living room of Lionel, our bass player. Our singer (Neil) and drummer (Chris) are both away on vacation for two weeks. I'm the keyboard player as well as temporary stand in singer as well. In this session we decided to try a whole bunch of songs to tick or flick for our set list and I have recorded some of them.
I recorded it with my el cheapo phone, hence the poor audio and our guitarist (Colin) is hardly heard because he had to set up in the kitchen! (small house)
Also we are using a drum machine in lieu our absent tub thumper.
We are all retired old guys who play together for pleasure and pennys but we do get gigs at community events, private partys and the local pub.

Hope it's not too long and boring and I will only leave it up at soundcloud for a week because it's not the usual thing to post there.

best regards

That was fun. Yeah, the recording was pretty crappy, but i can hear it all well. The first Fire song had the drum machine too loud --so is the bass, but i like that. wink But this 2nd one is much better. I can still hear Lionel and now also your keys and a little of Colin's guitar. You could've added a clip of Neil howling at the moon in Winchester. Good choice of songs. Which did you all decide to kick off the list? Did Chris program the drums for you? I've done that for a band once --daunting task, especially in the 90s, but i learned much respect for Ringo's timing ability.

She's right. Ain't Misbehavin' is a nice song. Does Lionel play with a pick? Sounds so clean --and excellent timing. Cool how you ended up playing The Weight as the last song. I heard it mentioned in the beginning and was disappointed when you didn't play it then. Well, thanks, Izzy, and thanks to all the VVB.

Myself and the guys are so thrilled that you took an interest in our humble ensemble. Kudos also for wading through such raw and rough audio. Lionel was jumping up and down with excitement like a little kid knowing that a brother bass player from the other side of the planet listened and commented on his playing. I gave him your SC addy and he is keen to hear all your songs.
I have now taken the audio down now because it has served it's purpose.
Once again from ALL the band , A huge THANKYOU for your interest Marty. 👍 💗

We like the different take on the love story.

Love this:
“Broken dreams and shattered hearts
We'll build a kingdom from discarded parts”

The vocal sounds tender and mellow, and as Andrew said, intimate.
The harmonies are very effective.

The soundstage on our monitors is great.
Love the subtle dynamics.

Enjoyed it and have fun in your band!

It sounds like your brain and mine are on the same wavelength--observing others and making up stories. grin
My favorite line: "Lonely lovers kissing stars"
Excellent band choices. I like the slow down ending.

Something tells me you'd do a killer version of this in a higher key for the verses.
Still cool though.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
