There are legitimate and good reasons someone may want to use RealBand or the Band-in-a-Box (BiaB) plugin. However I don't believe a user gains much, if anything, from using the BiaB plugin inside RealBand.

My reasoning is both RealBand and the BiaB plugin do not include some features offered in the main Band-in-a-Box program. As far as I can determine both RealBand and the BiaB plugin are missing the same features so each has the same limitations compared to the main Band-in-a-Box program. Since they both seem to have the same limitations there is no advantage to using the BiaB plugin inside RealBand.

I've never seen a list of what the main program can do that RealBand or the BiaB plugin can't do. However for example I know neither work properly with SGU files that include MultiStyles.

Jim.

Thanks for commenting...

This is why i see a powerfull solution in
Useing the strengths of BOTH bb and rb. Rather than one or the other.
IE a marriage of the two.

As to multi Styles in real band there are tricks a user can employ.
Like in my song pretty girl in my souncloud link...
The tremolo guitar is from a completely different style.
in fact many times I mix content from different styles.

Respect and happy New Year.

Haven't tried it this year, but a few years ago I asked about using the BIAB plugin in PowerTracks (because it didn't work). Jeff was able to get it to work. So given the similar code base, I would guess it should work in RealBand also, but haven't tried it.

justanoldmuso,
I agree both Band-in-a-Box and RealBand have their advantages. It is a good idea for Window users to be familiar with both programs.

Swapping RealTracks in a song is different than MultiStyles. MultiStyles have more than two substyles. A typical style has "A" and "B" substyles. A MultiStyle can have up to 24 substyles but most factory MultiStyles have 4 substyles or "A", "B", "C" and "D" substyles. Of course most people call a substyle a part marker.

You can filter on MultiStyles by opening the MultiPicker tab, "Styles", select Category, navigate to "More ..." in the "Other" category and select "MultiStyles".

I guess my thinking was as follows...

Now that the daw plugin has advanced is there any feature in it that could be used that would be advantageous.

I was also thinking...
Could tracks created in the daw plugin sync to tracks in RB.

I'm always looking for an edge...lol.

Finding “the Edge” in BIAB:
It Works Both Ways

You said “I’m always looking for an edge… lol” — and that stuck with me, So, I posed a few questions and comments to Chatgpt and here's the resulting reply:

CHATGPT:

Most BIAB users generate tracks, export them to a DAW, then manually comp, edit, manipulate, and arrange everything there. That workflow makes sense, and it’s powerful.

But it also quietly assumes something:

BIAB is a source tool, and the DAW is where the real arranging happens.

What’s easy to miss is that BIAB was also designed to work in the opposite direction — and in some ways, it’s surprisingly good at it.

BIAB Isn’t Just an Export Tool, BIAB can import external audio:

Live recordings
Backing vocals
Instruments recorded with unique plug-ins
DAW stems

Once imported, BIAB can:
Automatically select RealTrack-style intro snippets
Select ending and outro snippets
Apply automatic fades, crossfades, and transitions
Integrate those recordings into the song form using the chord chart

In other words, BIAB can behave like an arrangement-aware audio engine, not just a generator.
Most users never touch this side of the program — often because they don’t know it exists.

Where Medley Maker Fits In

This is where the RealTrack Medley Maker becomes a great arrangement tool.
Each BIAB Mixer track can host:
The main RealTrack
Plus 10 additional RealTracks, triggered by bars, chorus, part markers, or whole song
With 24 Mixer tracks, that’s 264 virtual instruments potentially shaping one arrangement over time.

Thinking this way reframes BIAB as:

Not “24 tracks”
But a time-based orchestration system
Very similar, conceptually, to how classic producers bounced and layered parts — except here it’s non-destructive and reversible.

The “Edge” Might Be Letting BIAB Arrange Again

If your workflow is:

Generate in BIAB
Finish entirely in the DAW
You’re already getting value.
But there may be an extra edge in:
Bringing edited or live material back into BIAB
Letting BIAB handle transitions, intros, endings, and sectional flow
Then exporting again with those arrangement decisions baked in
It’s not better or worse — just another tool in the chain that most people never explore.

Bottom Line

BIAB isn’t only a track generator feeding a DAW.
It’s also an arrangement engine that understands song form, and it can work both directions.

If you’re always looking for an edge, this might be one of the quieter ones hiding in plain sight.
