I'd encourage people first to practice their fundamentals until they don't have to think about them. The fundamentals can't be overstressed, fragments of scales and arpeggios make up the bulk of what we call music. If you can't do this without thinking, you are at a disadvantage.

There you have it. Take the words "PRACTICE" and "FUNDAMENTALS" from that if you take nothing else. Learn how to play. Not how to program computers and call it your own. While there is an intellectual component to making music, that component is best applied to learning those (say it with me) FUNDAMENTALS. Scales, keys, how the different keys have sharps and flats, how those keys relate to each other.

Cover bands vs. the alternatives - the choices for making money while making music. Notes Norton 48 minutes ago Forum: Off-Topic Jump to new postsJump to new posts
I've played in cover bands since I was a child, and I'm proud of that. It's served me well. First, in school, we covered Beethoven, Dvorak, Mozart, and a host of others. The music was in front of us, we read the dots on the page, and followed the conductor. Got into a rock band in school, covering the hits of the day. With that I eventually toured the country, met a lot of pretty girls, and eventually became the opening act for major stars, while their records were in the top 10 on Billboard. Almost had a record deal ourselves, but that's another story. Many years later, I took a day-job, to investigate what being normal was all about. To me, being normal is very overrated. It paid well, and I gigged on the weekends, but was a proletarian wage-slave during the week. That might be OK for others, but it wasn't for me. One of those weekend gigs was in a jazz band. The leader taught jazz theory and guitar at the University of Miami, and played with Ira Sullivan at one time. Big heavyweight jazz players came to sit in every once in a great while, players that made me feel like I was faking it. The problem was it was one day per week, Sunday afternoon. Nobody around here makes a living playing jazz. Perhaps if I lived in New York, Chicago, or some other big market. Well, the day-job ended, and I realized, I don't want to do that anymore. Here is the point of this thread. If you want to play music and gig, you will have to make compromises. The compromises depend on where you live and what the music scene is there.
  • Compromise #1: play cover songs that are popular in your area. It could be pop, country, classic rock, folk or whatever. If a lot of people are doing it there, you can probably make a living playing covers. I know, those who want to play “art music” consider this option a sell-out.
  • Compromise #2: play the “art music” of your choice, but in order to make a living, get a 40-hour, 5-days per week day-job. The art music could be jazz, originals, experimental, or whatever your heart is into.
Which is the right answer? It depends on you. Which is a bigger sell out? Cover songs or being a wage-slave? To me, working 40 hours per week not doing music is the bigger sell-out. YMMV I've done cover songs all my life. The mortgage is paid off, and I have zero debt. I don't have a lot of luxury items, and I would have made a lot more money if I stayed in electronics engineering. But I'm happy doing what I'm doing. When I was a Cable TV engineer, I was asked to do many things I liked, and many things that I did not. Most of all, I disliked being awakened by an alarm clock, putting on the metaphoric collar and leash, and reporting to the boss. But that's just me. Right now, I'm in about an 80% cover duo with my wife. I make my own backing tracks, and most of them are close to a famous recording. But we stylize the vocals, and leave room so we can improvise a solo in the song. Others are reimaginings of popular songs. Perhaps turn one into a Reggae beat, another Latin or funky/jazzy. These don't always work, but with experience, we've learned how to pick them better. A few other songs are ones we learned just for us. Once the audience is on your side, if you pick the right time, you can play music for yourself and they will actually like it. Our market won't support us if we wanted to do nothing but “art music”, so our Compromise #3 is to play what I guess you could call a semi-cover act. We are not as much of a cover band as a symphony orchestra, tribute band, or all-cover band, but I don't have to take a day job to pay the bills. Whatever your choice is, remember, there is no one right way for all of us. Whatever you choose, put your heart into it, and if you are enjoying it, don't let anyone tell you it's the wrong way to do it. Insights and incites by Notes ♫

Re: LIST OF USB AUDIO INTERFACES THAT ARE "MULTICLIENT ASIO" justanoldmuso 49 minutes ago Forum: Post your own Tips and Tricks here Jump to new postsJump to new posts
FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS RE BUYING A USB AUDIO INTERFACE. (this is more aimed at users new to music production…. based on many years of buying interfaces for myself, and seeing typical mistakes made by others in buying etc etc.) 1..just because a friend is happy with an interface doesnt necessarily mean you will be. 2..there are so many differently configured pc's out there that what might work on one pc might not on another. 3..just because someone on the net says 'i'm happy with xyz' doesnt necessarily mean you will be particularly if you have different feature set needs. 4..if you're baffled why an interface doesnt work on your pc but does on someone's pc you know…it could be simply that your friend has a pc that's been specifically optimised for music production or custom built by a manufacturer for music production and tweaked or your friend isnt on the net whereas you are and thus your running special protection mechanisms that take pc resources away from the primary task of music production. There are many reasons… regarding buying or optimising an existing pc for music production have a leisurely read of this… https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=795663#Post795663 5.so youve been on one or more recording forums and are baffled by the many different usb audio interface recommendations. For example, start a thread on a forum… 'I'm a new user…what do you all recommend as a usb audio interface'....youll get a load of different answers and opinions from studios large and small…. thus its important to assess your OWN feature set needs which might be completely different from people recommending a product on the thread you started. 6..as i said in the highlighted thread above to save disappointment its imperative imho to try and test the interface via renting (very inexpensive) for a week or get a 30 day return. The gear shop I deal with has a no questions asked return/money back policy. 7..it's very important to do one's homework prior to purchase. and really research the many many interface offerings on the market versus your needs so you dont miss the best product for you…and i would suggest not to rush into a purchasing decision. The interface, and I can't stress this enough is 'THE HEART OF YOUR STUDIO', i.e. in the same way people take their time re-buying a house to live in…same goes for an interface so buying mistakes arent made. Another reason to 'try before buy'. 8..some people are swayed by user ratings. i suggest you do your own testing and research because your pc might be different in how its configured or they are using hot shot pc's that cost oodles versus your old clunker that might need optimising for music production. 9..A BIG FOCUS in your product search should be interface DRIVERS and their performance. just because someone on the net gushes about their interfaces drivers…maybe your system is different. you won't know till you test ON YOUR PC. 10..i can't stress enough that the combo of pc and interface deliver very low total latency. please read up carefully on the net about how to get a very low latency music production environment... and/or see my link in this post. as you can see the purchasing decision re an interface should not be made without considering various factors. Finally, one's budget should be considered. as ive been in tech for many years I typically buy in the middle price range…as i'm always concerned about rapid changes in technology/obsolescence …just something to consider....also if i see price drops on a product...and its not a rule..but i will ponder if a new product version is coming out. Now you might want to know where you might look at lots of different interfaces. There are many sites on the net that sell a plethora of devices where you can research devices with also interesting articles and/or blogs….eg… https://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Audio_Interfaces https://www.zzounds.com/cat--Audio-Interfaces--2418 https://www.musiciansfriend.com/audio-interfaces and many others on the net….also try your local gear shop if you have one nearby. I hope the above helps someone. happiness. om

Marty, it is very important you're able to listen to the making of this song! You are always positive, but I think I can read between your lines sometimes. That has it's impact on the result. Thanks for that and the nice things you wrote here.

Hi BT, thanks for the nice words on the song and also your saying from James 4:14 (we call him Jacob here, I think). That's all true, but luckily we hope we are more than that vapor, otherwise we won't get anywhere (during our lifes)

We enjoyed the video too, especially the end with the people reading the books following the line of “my words will become my legacy” and, of course, the cute cat. Now let’s all remember that we can still be young at heart. 😊 Good one! J&B
Hi Bud and Janice, it was a little struggle to get the lyrics this way, in English and rhyming too. That's how I came to the word 'unkind' in relation to 'mind'. I was a bit fond of that. And now you picked that line! Funny... Same kind of story on the instruments. I like strings a lot, also those electric guitars, but still I missed something. A subte different sound. And that turned out to be the banjo. Maybe you noticed I mostly have a cat in my videos. This one was very lovely. Thanks for noticing! And I fully agree with your last sentence. I like humor too ;-)

Hello David, Anne-Marie did a marvelous job on this song. And her BG-vocals after the solo really did a lot to the song. I gave her a concept of the song, with BG-vocals from me. But I said; you can remove everything (except the lead vocals) and surprise me. She did!!! Thanks for what you wrote on it. I hope we will have nice weather one day, but until then I hope you have a very nice day for now, Hans

I think what is understood in that statement, is ho well you learn to play the instrument. It's a combination of learning things until you can play them without thinking about them, and enough experience so that you can play the right things at the right time without thinking about it. When I was young and learning to improvise in bands, I did a lot of thinking about what I was doing. Some things I did worked out well to my ears, others did not. Plenty more were between the two extremes. I never intended to get into the zone, I never tried to do it, and I don't think you can intentionally get into the flow. With enough experience, it just started happening. I didn't even notice it at first. So it's about learning to play the instrument well, plus a good dose of experience. As I said, I don't think you can go into the flow intentionally, and some people who are very good players never seem to get there, either. So I wouldn't be concerned about it. I'd encourage people first to practice their fundamentals until they don't have to think about them. The fundamentals can't be overstressed, fragments of scales and arpeggios make up the bulk of what we call music. If you can't do this without thinking, you are at a disadvantage. Then learn some other people's solos that you particularly like, and are at your skill level. Keep progressing and learning more difficult passages. Little by little, you will build up a vocabulary of licks, and they will reside in your subconscious. Somehow, and I can't explain how, to me, it's magic, the right notes will come out at the right time while you are improvising. My best advice is not to think about it. If you are meant to get into the flow, it'll happen all by itself. Keep learning, no matter how much you know, there is something else to learn. That's one of the things I like about music. Speaking of attitudes, I love your attitude on this one. Cool song, and love the lyrics. Cool funky feel and that guitar was an excellent choice, although it does seem to cut into the vocal a little at times. I'm not a good judge of cheesy, so I defer to the category speicialists.

I meant that Eddie's statement about learning an instrument is spot on. Some so called "musicians" are just cutting and pasting loops together or using only AI to make a song. Once you have learned an instrument the flow can come naturally. I know you are learning an instrument or two so that statement doesn't apply to you. Yes, I think flow aligns with the article. Once you are in the groove and flow is happening it feels like all other parts of my brains shuts down, i.e. it is the ultimate high, at least for me. Yes, me and my doc has been on top of it. Actually I have found out that Hemp Root, dark cherry pills, and fish oil really help. On occasion I do have meds that help but I rarely need to take them. But some damage has been done.

I play 3. And I write. I produce my own stuff and have produced other local artists in my area. My lyrics come from my soul, not AI. My chord progressions come from my head, not Scaler. I have a BA in Music and as of this month I have 68 years of experience. (I followed that up with a 2nd degree, a BS in Computer Science.) I have been in some of the top bands in my area. I am just now old and physically unable to attack music with the passion and respect music deserves, so I retired from it rather than pretend I still have what it takes. I have now retired and quit playing, but I didn't have to give the degree back. I still know music inside and out. I have been a showcase winner of a free copy of BIAB 4 times. I am all over the showcase. Don't you know how to search? You likely do what you do at a very high level. I would never pretend to do what you do. That's good advice.

rharv, VERY well articulated. I agree that practice is fundamental, the musician must know the piece "backwards and inside out". And this does go without saying. And I agree, as you say, that there is a difference between reading/thinking/computing (clunky, descrete, relatively slow, digital?) and feel/groove (smooth, continuous, effortless, relatively fast, emotional?, analog?) I'm sure there is more to this subject and it's neat that researchers are investigating this. Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
