The built-in chips are designed to do one thing very well: play back audio. That would include mixing if mixing just means adjust track volumes. I'm fairly happy listening to built-in audio through headphones. I've had no end of troubles with built-in audio trying to drive anything else, mostly with ground loops and CPU etc. 'twitter', but also because so often the connectors are just plain poor. Mini-jacks, RCAs and the like. Most or all external interfaces offer proper connectors, seem to have the grounding sorted, seem to keep out the noises that so often happens and usually also offer pretty good pre-amps and phantom power. For me, external interfaces seem like money well spent.

Very relaxing, Carl. I like the way your guitar leads but with various instruments interweaving, subtlely. I’m interested in the song title - what that means and its relationship to the music? Well done. Andrew

............................ I would love to better understand how a sound card or audio interface will help users that do not record. If one does not record then one does not need an audio interface. … I use an interface for recording only. Although one can use monitor controllers and interfaces for playback on a Mac, they are never necessary for stereo. They can be convenient which is why I use a monitor controller. Having a good set of speakers or near field monitors is another story. Those small computer speakers just don't hack it. Yeah

An ARM based PC may have a chance. Count on any Intel based PC made now to be obsolete before then. This has nothing to do with whether or not the hardware will last—with any decent cooling system, that should be east to achieve.

Several of my computers including one I built myself in 2008 is still totally functional. I could probably install a new 64 bit is and keep it running. I originally installed Windows 7 pro 32 bit due to how stable it was. The problem is technology is moving forward so quickly anything you build or buy today is antiquated in less than 2 years. With that in mind, rather than doing the upgrade to the old build, I simply purchased a rehabbed Dell from the Amazon rehab store. It was loaded with W10 and halfway decent specs for somewhere around $400. It's what I'm using now and it's doing a good job with very few problems. It came with a wireless mouse and keyboard. I use a HDTV for the monitor. It's set up for music recording but also has access to the Internet. My studio is on a farm so talk about dust? And spiders? Yep. I reckon I need to bring my portable air compressor to the studio and blow out the computers.

That’s a valuable clarification. You’re right. I just said what you referred to, today in another thread. The built-in chips are designed to do one thing very well: play back audio. That would include mixing if mixing just means adjust track volumes. So I would say if you are recording, you should use something better than a built-in RealTec chip running a generic ASIO emulating driver. I would also say the CPU becomes more important than the sound card when using plugins including effects and software synths. Mixing with effects and virtual instruments can involve severe stress on a computer, but again, purely audio playback is the one thing any computer should handle well because that’s what the vendors are building them for.

OK, the web host and the shopping cart company were correct (I think) saying it wasn't their problem. owe them an apology. It seems like the pesky little S at the end of the http was due to the dumb S webmaster (that would be me). I'm a better musician than I am an HTML coder. Thank you Mike and others for pointing out the problem and giving me enough clues to find a fault (or hundreds of the same one repeated). Going by The Troubleshooters Assumption: There is only one thing wrong - and if that didn't fix it, there is still only one other thing wrong. I guess I assumed that since I paid for the secure server, all would just point there, whether the S was on the end or not. Or else, I just didn't think about that at all. Hopefully, lesson learned. The dumb S troubleshooter is self-taught from a book "HTML In Plain English" back in the 1990s, and does all his work on the Notepad text editor. Well, he found hundreds of http: statements that are now https: and is hoping he didn't miss one. Since I can't recreate the problem over here, will you please try again and let me know? Thanks. An embarrassed Notes ♫ Norton

The Reaper model is very similar to how Cakewalk displays Preferences. In this model it is VERY important that attention is given to where each setting is placed. For example in the Reaper screen shot above I would expect ALL path settings to be under Paths. I would not expect the paths for song projects to be located under Projects. The last thing you want is to hunt for a setting because the setting is not where you think it should be. I realize there maybe good reasons for a setting to be repeated in multiple places (which I hope doesn't happen) or that a setting has as much reason to be placed in either position A or B. I hope in those instances PG Music will either ask the pulic forum or Beta Testers for comments.

I have seen multiple user posts strongly suggest that new users should invest in a computer sound card or an audio interface versus using the (normally) Realtec (but sometimes Intel or Cirrus) audio solution built-into the computer motherboard. While that's not bad advice I don't necessarily agree a sound card or audio interface will resolve the posted issue I see in many threads. In particular I don't believe cards or interfaces will resolve any issue where playback or mixing is part of a question. However, I do agree an audio interface can make recording audio easier and very possibly capture audio better than the built-in solution. I suggest there are Band-in-a-Box users that do not record but instead exclusively use BiaB for arranging, mixing and/or audio playback. I would love to better understand how a sound card or audio interface will help users that do not record.

"The Right Track (co-write with floyd jane / feat. Peter on guitar)" <-- Yeah, that alone tells us it's gonna be a huge hit. I wasn't forum born 10 years ago, but on this version... well, I can't imagine it without Peter. Man, I love the write with a feel that grabs ya and the lyrics keeps you engrossed. The entertwining vocals are magical. A pro master!! Thank you Marty, this has been one of our favs for years and it was fun and interesting to start over on it. So the generous comments are all the more appreciated. J&B

Would love to see a buffer size option to help deal with latency. Both guitar interfaces are basically useless in BIAB but work perfectly in Reaper on same computer by adjust buffer size option. I hope this is something that can be implemented! Thanks

Tano pretty much nailed our thoughts on the harmonies and the arrangement. And we further agree with the melody note repeats. I think you were fortunate to connect with such a great vocalist. And especially one that you could well communicate with. I rambled on a bit about mastering below. Apologies Enjoyed it, J&B PS There is a post entitled "Loudness Target Limits for Streaming Platforms" on the off topics forum. I responded twice and my second response has some reference to our mastering techniques. You might find the info regarding the use of a "reference song" of some interest. FWIW Mastering for us is very personal regarding what WE want it to achieve. No way could we turn that over to AI. I want control over every aspect of it. You can't make a bad mix sound good with mastering but you can make a good mix sound bad. For us the goal is to make good mix sound great. And you have a good mix. And if your mastering program is brickwalling the mix it's time to try something else.

BIAB 2025 Audiophile has 300 new RealTracks and Drums in FLAC and these can be downloaded from your User Portal. My only concern was that I could not see how to download the legacy tracks. To be fair, I did not ask PG Music to see if that was possible. In any case, that is why I opted to have 2025 shipped to me. It came on a flash drive that is a lot slower than the hard drives we got in the past. I dragged the tracks into my old RealTracks and Drums folders and reclaimed about 1.2TB drive space.

This is a thread that has been dormant for a few months, and yet it’s extremely relevant and important, and we have been specifically invited to make specific suggestions. Some of those cause strong reactions, which indicates how critical this issue is. So let’s keep going. It was just mentioned that PG Music is looking into possibly adapting to the Reaper model for handling Preferences. Would one of you mind posting a screen shot of what that looks like? It’s been many years since I gave Reaper a try. Thanks.

... most of us are looking at Reaper's preferences as a model. It's excellent and a popular style. Ardour, Mixbus and Audacity all use very similar. Having the tree layout on the left gives flexibility and good ergonomics, whilst being able to handle very many options.

Gordon, I’ve never heard of that. Still, everyone on Windows serious about making music should consider a separate sound card with its own driver. I totally agree. Buying an external sound module was possibly the best single thing I did.

Herb, superb backing track and great playing. Love the song and the arrangement moves the song along in all the right places at all the right times. The sheen is quite lovely and makes for pleasant listening. The vocals sound really nice, but they do remind me of synth vocals on some lines. Might be something in processing. The ambient FX on the vocals are quite nice. Super song! Thanks for listening. See my reply to ghostgum and see if that answers your question. Herb, didn't really have a question, just made a comment about the character of the vocals unrelated to ghostgum's vocal harmony question. Don't really need a response at any rate. Thanks just the same!

i like that bass also! Great track, and lots to learn from here. Thanks for that tip about using Melodyne to create a harmony track--I'll be using that for sure. I esp liked the stripped down outro, very effective. Thanks for sharing your quality work!
