I am running BIAB 2010, build 294, and have run into a couple of strange problems. Hopefully some or all of them are known and I can alter what I'm doing to avoid them.
1. When using realtracks, sometimes the mute function refuses to work. Even though I tell a track to mute, it keeps playing. Even if I mute them all one by one. The only thing that seems to fix this is to use the alt-function that mutes all the tracks, then I can turn them back on one by one.
2. When playing songs that use realtracks, I sometimes get pauses or dropouts. Perhaps my system could be blamed for this one.
3. I can no longer get held chords on the 1st ending bar to hold. I get one short shot on beat one, and then nothing for 1 and 3/4 bars. I am using the process listed in the FAQ, and I have succesfully used this in the past. I am using the old "built-in" style for a swing blues.
thanks in advance for any ideas.
Dave

Hi Dave,
What are your system specs? If your system is on the older side, it is possible that the generation of Realtracks is causing the problem. This is because fast Realtrack generation is a background process and will be using a large amount of computer resources while your computer is playing the song. This could result in not having enough resources to engage additional commands. Such an effect would also be more noticeable when using multiple Realtracks in a song.
If I was having this problem, I'd try turning off the fast generation of Realtracks and see what happens (Opt. >> Preferences >> Realtracks >> Speed up generation of Realtracks). Reboot BIAB after doing this just to make sure the change sticks. If the problem persists, then it's easy enough to reactive the fast generation.
Regards, Noel

Whenever BiaB doesn't do something that it is supposed to do or used to do and stopped doing it:
1) Try rebooting the computer first, you may have just lost resources.
2) If that doesn't do the trick, inside BiaB, under the Options menu, try Return to Factory Settings.

Thanks for the suggestions.
My system is a laptop, 2 gig pentium with a gig of memory. I'll try the experiment of turning off the fast realtrack generation and the return to factory settings.

That is an odd word. Factory. Factory Reset. Pgmusic has lunch buckets, a punch clock, smokestacks, and a big factory wall by the old canal? Sorry about slipping the Pogues in there lads.
Or, what is probably more true, is a bunch of people with beards, long hair, (except for the women) who show up for work with organically grown tomatoes on 43 grain bread, drinking Starbucks with a Soy additive, and inhaling the natural medicinal products of combustion.
Well at least the software smokes ...

I solved one problem. It was self inflicted.
I ran into a problem earlier today where I had a funny sounding track, then I remembered seeing BIAB say something about converting an mp3 to wav when I opened a song. I realized that I had named the mp3 of the track the same as the song file. I guess when you do that, BIAB wants to be helpful and imports the file into the audio track of the song. In one case the audio track was far different than the newly generated version and the drums sounded horrible. Wiping out the audio track and renaming the .mp3 and .wav files fixed this.
It turns out this is the same cause as my song that refuses to mute parts. Because the audio track was still playing, I couldn't get that to shut up unless I did "Mute all". So now I renamed all the troublemakers and now muting and soloing works fine!
I did try a factory defaults reset an a reboot for the other two problems (chord not being held at the ending and breakups during playing realtracks). It didn't make any difference.

That's the way the program is designed to work. If an audio file matches the name of the BIAB file, then BIAB will play the audio file along with your BIAB file. It's been that way since BIAB first supported audio in addition to MIDI.

Hello Dave,
Do holds work anywhere in the song? Do you have a \RealTracks\Library\Holds folder with about 90 subfolders? Is "Allow RealTracks shots and holds" checked in the Song Settings window?

Hi Andrew,
Holds work fine for realtracks. The song in question is plain old midi using the old ZZ blues shuffle style.
I did an experiment and changed one of the chords in the chorus to a hold and that worked. So the issue is just trying to hold the chord in the first bar of the 2 bar ending.
John -- You're right. I've never used that feature before, but I know now :-)
thanks, Dave

Dave, I don't remember that holds or shots have ever worked in MIDI style-endings. The ending bars behave differently from others in several ways. Any chord after the first beat is ignored in an ending. The style (on that chord) plays the 8 beat pattern prescribed for the instruments. It will not change course to play a hold or a shot or a push, or anything else at all.
You can get into the Stylemaker and change the ending bars to suit, which is a good thing to learn, and a permanent solution to the trouble you have. Or you can straighten it all up later in a sequencer.
Well...you could also try using a hold in a tag (not an Ending -- plain bars only). I have never had musical results from that, but maybe you'll do better. ________

Yes - you'll need to turn off the automatic ending to make that work. If your song has more than one chorus, you can use a tag ending.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
