Common? No, not like what you are describing.

You should address the points Mac is making.

The right-click, play from measure works fine here. If you do this without first having played the song, it will take a few seconds to generate the parts and you will see the hourglass. This is particularly true if you specify a chorus other than 1 (you did not say which one you normally specify). Are you seeing the hourglass before it crashes?

Also, "crash" needs to be defined clearly. There are crashes, and there are "hangs". I wonder if yours is a hang, waiting for your hard drive to spin up and load the RealTracks. If you wait a minute, does it recover? Have you defragged the hard drive lately?

I didn't really think so - I haven't seen any other "crash" threads in this forum. I suppose you would have to define this as a "hang", in that the Win7 spinner just keeps spinning; but it's not regenerating RT's, I didn't hit play, just the scroll button. It doesn't recover.

I will try a defrag. Thanks.

Well, we've had our share of both crashes and hangs during beta testing, which is to be expected, but I think the current version 2011 is as stable as it's been in a long time, since before RealTracks and many of the new powerful features.

From your website, I see you live in the USA. Have you tried calling PG Music Support? They are really good.

Okay, a couple of other things to try.

What are your UAC (User Account Control) settings? Have you tried lowering it to be less restrictive?

Did you happen to install BIAB into the "Program Files" folder? That can cause crash and burn problems. That's why PGMusic suggests it be installed in C:\BB. Me, I just created a C:\Apps folder and install any applications that shouldn't go into the "c:\Program Files" folder on Windows 7. Because BIAB doesn't work through the registry (which Microsoft prefers you do) and instead writes directly to it's config files, Windows 7 doesn't like that and it hangs.

Just a thought.

That's a good tip from John. I've seen others have headaches over that.

I'm suspecting this is an ASIO problem or some config setting with your Fast Track USB. Do you have Biab set up to use ASIO or MME? If it's ASIO tell us what you have set in Biab's audio input/output window and the ASIO control panel. If Biab is set to use ASIO, change it to MME and see what happens.

Also, the TTS-1 is a good solid DXi softsynth, lots of us have it and it plays perfect with Biab. When you have the crashing, are you using only midi tracks using the TTS-1 or another synth? No Real Tracks or Real Drums or is it a combination of both? If you're not sure you can usually tell by the sound quality but also look at the instrument names accross the top, if any are green those are Real Tracks/Drums. Anything in yellow are midi tracks. I would try a test by picking a style that is all midi ie all the instruments in yellow, then trying an all RT style ie everything is green and do the same thing and see if it still crashes. If it does for one and not the other, there's a clue.

I really don't want to bother them until I'm sure it's not something I'm doing wrong. If I can't get it right, I will contact them.

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I reset the UAC to "Never Notify), and I'll see if that helps.

My BB is installed under "C/BB", not the Program Files folder.

It is set up to use MME, not ASIO. I also have a Delta 44, which runs great in ASIO, but the USB interface is more convenient for input monitoring in Sonar. If the problem turns out to be the USB, I can alway use the Delta.

When it hangs, it has been with RT's. I will try it with an all-MIDI song and see if it hangs.

Thanks for the help!

Bob

From your prior posts, I don't think you will have a problem with all MIDI. As Mac suggested, is it a corrupt song file? If you start a new song, same problem?

The fact that your setup works fine in SONAR is instructive.

As far as calling PG Music Support, they are really receptive and excellent, and I'm sure they would rather have you call them for help than have an unresolved problem about crashing posted in the forum. You've already had many of the more knowledgeable among us giving you suggestions. Time to punt.

Punt, I agree. You realize that in Canada you punt on 3rd down, so it might be sooner in the queue so to speak. And the ball is fatter. And the field is 110 yards with really huge end zones so the extra man can party. All said the extra space on the sidelines makes for good end arounds.

As to the whole thing it's weird. Beta testing, on my machines, never caused any hangs that I remember, even the early ones were pretty stable. I'm suspecting a uac problem first, and guessing it might be that a re-install of the whole thing is a good idea. But putting in the latest build should patch up anything wrong with the main file n'est pas?

I've used the program for hundreds of hours this year, I'm really working on the horn a lot, and it's a great help.

I need to go through those 10,000 songs I've stuck in folders and weed out the duplicates and figure out how to cut them down. I sure would like a utility that would tell me I have 8 versions of "I love Paris" and one of them has a date of this year and the others are displayed so you can kill them. It's tough to do by hand.

If it's only with RT's then it could be something stupidly simple that got me a couple years ago. When you turn on "fast generation" of RT's and that may be the default setting in 2011, not sure, it really isn't generating the RT's any faster. What's happening is that allows you to start the song much sooner than before but the generating is still going on in the background while the song is playing. I remember if I started a song, suddenly stopped it after just hearing a few bars and then started again I would get a white screen. I thought that was a crash until I realized I just had to wait for the tracks to finish generating. Someone mentioned this earlier in the thread. Try just playing a song for 30 seconds before stopping and starting up again and see if that fixes it.

With my setup, I noticed that any USB audio or MIDI device has to be plugged in and recognized by the OS before I start up BiaB. Otherwise, when BB starts and goes to look for the device if it was the last selected device, it will crash or freeze on startup sometimes.

As someone who answers the tech lines, I can vouch for this. Forums are not always the most effective method of tech support - talking it out and troubleshooting over the phone is usually a faster way to resolve these sorts of problems. Our tech line is in my signature - give us a shout, we'd be happy to help! We're open until 8PM PT Monday to Friday (Oh, and don't forget to mention this thread, it'll make it easier for us to catch up on your issue when you call).

I changed the UAC to the lowest restrictive setting, and un-checked the fast gereration of RT's. That seems to have been my problem. It's not hanging now.

Many thanks to everyone who helped me get over this hurdle (espectially jford and jazzmammal)!

I love these programs.

Excellent, good job. The next time another person posts about the same problem and they will, just wait a few days, jump in and answer them.

90dB, I'm glad it's working, but I don't think you are finished yet. You changed two things and now it works. Which one did the trick?

With an i3 and 4 GB of RAM, you should not have to uncheck the fast generation of RealTracks. Try checking that to restore it, and see if things still work. If so, then we will know it was the UAC that really fixed it.

Without this test, people will cite this thread and recommend to the next person with this problem that they do two things to fix it. One of them may be unnecessary.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
