BIAB ver 2011 (windows) style: C_TRAVIS.STY if i open stylemaker using "edit current style" and then select "bass", i see in the top row (A8 beat) the different patterns and the weights assigned to them (the last one having a weight of 9 assigned to it). in this row, 3 patterns from the left, is a pattern a pattern with a particular bass run in it. after assigning the chords in my song, this pattern appears in a random fashion, always when the chord progression goes from the root 7th > 4 (example D7th to G). there's only about 3 bars in the song where i'd like to have this run inserted. the big question: without having to rewrite all the bass patterns, how can i insert this bass run at the desired measures and have it so that it appears at these bars and these bars only, and not randomly.
i've gone through two of the stylemaker tutorials and it seems and from these i gather i would want to use a bar mask. it the stylemaker overview it lists bar masks but doesn't tell you specifically how to set up a bar mask.
i've gone about as far as i can - any help greatly, greatly app

An easier way to get what you want would be to create another style based on the first style that only includes the bass run pattern you want (delete the other patterns). Then, in your song, just do an F5 style change at the bar where you want the bass run and change back when your done. All the other instruments would stay the same. You could call it C_TRAVIB.sty (B for bass).
Just a thought.

wow, what a great and easily implemented solution! Thanks John! You da man!
However, The original question is a good one... and from a style building perspective I think a lot of people would like to know how to do exactly what he asked... plus a lot of other things about creating styles.
Do you (or anybody else) know if there is a style maker tutorial anywhere?
(I'm hoping the answer isn't something totally obvious, like a folder named c:\BB\style_maker_tutorial, but I'm not at my music computer at the moment so I can't look. I searched the forum for "style maker tutorial" and "style builder tutorial" but didn't get any hits over the past 2 years)

"thanks John" he replied sheepishly (so much information, so few brain cells) STUPID QUESTION-O-METER 0_________________/_100 I never noticed the TUTORIALS link because it only shows up under the SUPPORT menu, which I rarely go to. I incorrectly assumed that the sublink menu was the same for every main menu option... but it isn't http://www.pgmusic.com/howtos.htmLOTS of really useful info here! Can't believe I didn't know about this long ago! (I probably did, but then forgot. )

many tks for the reply, john. i tried creating another style but ran into problems. when i saved it, it shows up under the bb directory. whenever i try to open the file with biab, i get the error msg: brun.sty is not a valid win32 application. since i can't open the new style i've created, i don't know if i created it correctly.
1. could you tell me how to open the brun.sty file 2. i just started working with stylemaker a few days ago and don't really know what i'm doing. could you give somewhat more detailed instructions as to just how i would create the new style and how to use the F5 style change. i know how to open stylemaker > edit current style and how to delete the patterns i don't want. after that i'm not really sure how or where to save it as i really don't understand the file storage structure in biab.
thanks again 4 reply

There isn't a way to get a certain riff to happen at a certain bar within a style.
You can set a riff to play on a pre-fill bar (2 bars before a part change), or on a fill bar (1 bar before a part change). You do that by setting a riff's options - bar mask to pref-fill or fill, and setting the weight to 9 (always happen).
If that isn't what you need, and you need a specific bar # instead, then John's suggestion is a good one (a custom style, with a style change).
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

Hi, Fivestring -
After you save your new file, you just press F5 on the bar where you want the bass run, then select the new style (either by stylepicker or by selecting the filename). When you're done with your bass run, press F5 again at the bar you want to resume the original style and re-select the original style. Everytime you do that, BIAB puts a red box around the bar, so you can see where you've made changes.
Hope that helps.

From the BIAB main menu, select "Styles, Stylemaker, Edit a Style"; then choose the style file you want to edit. After editing, save it as a different name. You can then use it; however, if you want to see it in the stylepicker, you'll need to rebuild the list and then you should find it in the "Other Styles Found" category. If you don't know what to do once you get into Stylemaker, I suggest reading the user manual and viewing the "how-to" videos, which can be found at Stylemaker Part 1 and Stylemaker Part 2. Good luck.

Let me ask you this - did you happen to install BIAB into the C:\Program Files folder? That can sometimes cause problems.
Or, how are you actually trying to open the style file? You don't do a "File Open"; use either select it from the StylePicker, or from the dialog box from within the StylePicker to open a specific style file, or likewise within the StyleEditor.
Using styles is one of the BIAB major basics, so you shouldn't be getting an error like that.

my biab 2011 is installed on the HD that came with my software pkg. it is ultra plusPAK and it shows up as drive letter I on my computer. i'm trying to open the file by clicking on it in the bb folder, which gives me an "open with" dialog box and when i select biab from the available options, i get the error msg about the file not being a valid win 32 app.
it opens OK when i try your suggestions about opening it from the style picker. thanks 4 the tip.
well, i'm off to see the wizard - got tutorials and many other resources to work with- got styles to create and edit. man, i'm gonna be busy but i'll let you know how i make out.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
