A very basic and simple question:
I have always used a table PC with BIAB and other music softwares. Table PC:s are "easy" to expand and update f.ex. to add more memory. Now my old PC is getting old and it is time for a new one. Most of people seems to buy nowadays a laptop PC. Should I still stay on the table PC model? How many of you BIAB users are using laptop? Will I lose something with laptop?

Hi Matti,

As I see it, there's nothing much to choose between them, but the monitor is possibly the one area to consider. If the monitor breaks on the laptop, you probably end up changing the whole machine, but a separate monitor is easily replaced.

As we get more information on screen, you may want to go for a bigger monitor than you can get on a laptop and although you can use an external monitor with the laptop, the resolution is sometimes restricted, so you don't gain anything.

As you say, expanding a laptop isn't easy, so if you go down that route, make sure you get a decent spec to start with.

Hi Matti,

If you are not planning on using BIAB for live gigs, stick with a desktop. ROG has some valid points.

Cheers,
Mike

You pay a premium for the reduced size and portability of a laptop. You always can get more bang for the buck from a desktop PC. However, sometimes portability is a super important consideration.

Laptops have only one advantage, and that's portability.

Desktops win out in almost every other category.

With the Band in a Box USB drive, I have been using my laptop more often than not, the desktop is getting dusty.

Band in a Box USB drive and laptop work just fine for me.

Additional powered speakers are in order if you intend to play along with it.

I've been using ThinkPad laptops exclusively since 2002. Never had a problem because of that. I gave away my desktop to a relative.

But we each use our computers in different ways. Nobody can answer that for you. What's best for me may not be best for you.

But BiaB runs just fine on my laptop.

I have both ,use my 15.5"laptop only when traveling and it is convenient, however the laptop is slower and the desktop has better expandability for more storage.

If it's on your lap you do feel the heat although the newer ones may be better.

I prefer the full size keyboard of the desktop and recommend an optical mouse if you get a laptop as the touch pads to me are kind of "klunky" when working in BIAB/RB.

If you have or are getting a big screen tv I would recommend a 1080 HD LED which can also be hooked up to either type of computer and give you excellent resolution... if you can set up a desktop nearby or get a long connector.
Really makes up for the laptops small screen size!

There are several comparison sites like this to help you decide:

Both will do the job, just depends on you needs and price range.
Best wishes,
Carkins

Same here I phased the old clunker desktop out, but keep in mind I do little recording mostly arranging and live gigs. The newer laptops are much lighter, battery life is upwards to 6 hours, and they run way more cooler on your lap, or is some cases "laps" if you know what I mean.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
