As far as I can see I have everything checked in power options for neither the computer or the monitor to sleep. The computer stays on but the monitor goes blank after a time when there is no activity.
When this happens, I can only get it going again by pulling the plug.
Your help will be greatly appreciated, as always.
Don S.

The power options are different from the screen saver and the hibernation. It's not a screen saver of a black screen, since you can't get control back. My guess is therefore hibernation gone bad. Is this a laptop?

Other Don, I had a similar but different problem in Win 7/64 (same kernel) and, after giving up in desperation, I checked www.majorgeeks.com and searched monitor sleep problem and found that it is very common with our OS. They also solved it but, since mine was different, I won't confuse the issue.

Thanks Matt and original Don. No,it is not a laptop, it is a 5 year old desktop. it just came to mind that not too long ago,I drew a spark when I plugged my speaker plug into the wrong socket . It appeared that no damage was done, but perhaps not. Don S.

BTW, my Mexican aide, Tracy, assures me that Don means "prince" in Spanish. In Irish it means "put your clothes on, you bloody exhibitionist!"

A system restore took care of the problem, thankfully.
Some time back, I took this 6gb computer for some warranty work. Recently I noticed that it now has 4gb.
I wonder if it's worth the trouble to put another memory stick in it?

No but it is worth your trouble to report to the police that you had a memory stick stolen while they were working on the computer. Can you prove it had 6mb in it? This is theft, and I would have to exercise a great amount of restraint to not even the score MY way.
I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.
1. How much did you make in 2023? 2. Send it to us.

Hi Eddie,
It's been a couple of years. The guy was changing the MB. I would prefer to think that it was an honest oversight.
Hey, Big 10 football isn't all that far off, eh?

Before suspecting crime, it would be a very good idea to look inside and see if the stick isn't still there, for there can be a few other reasons why the OS does not report all of the available RAM, such as a bad memory stick (some defects, the stick can remain in the socket but will be turned off by the mobo bios, etc. because it isn't reporting anymore) OR possibly a bad something in the mobo itself.

Or the the memory stick could perhaps even be improperly seated.

I had reason to have the cover off a couple weeks ago and noticed it then. It has 2 2GB sticks. It works well on 4gb (most of the time), but even with 6gb it never turned out to be the powerhouse that I thought I getting.
I think a big problem is that Norton 360 is continuing running, not to mention Acronis, which I've shut down until I need it again.
Anyhow, thanks for replying.

Don,
My advice would be to get rid of anything associated with Norton. It's usually hard to get rid of, but well worth the trouble.

I'm thinking of doing that, Bob. I've got about 30 days on the current subscription. I may just go back to Avast which has served me well in the past.

Don,
You may want to consider Microsoft Security Essentials.
It's Free and you'll forget you even have it installed. And it works great.

Other Don, my new Dynavox was terribly slow. I contacted support and they advised dumping Avast and using MS Security Essentials. Instant relief. Avast was a bottleneck.

Don & Bob,
I installed the MS Securities Essentials as per your suggestion and there is indeed a vast improvement on the Vista Machine. Not so noticeable on the Windows 7 laptop.
Thanks,
Don S.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
