Hi everyone

I am using BIAB 2013. I want to record my guitar whilst playing a BIAB backing, and am using a guitar to USB unit which also includes a headphone output.

The guitar is recorded (it plays back through the headphones afterwards) and during recording I can hear the backing tracks....and now the inevitable BUT...

I cannot hear the guitar along with the backing tracks whilst I am actually playing/recording. It wont work in either BIAB or RB.

However, it works fine using Audacity, so right now, I am recording to both at the same time, so that I can monitor using audacity and have the final mix in BIAB, but it is a bit of a pain doing it this way.

So the question is:-
Can BIAB/RB actually do what I am trying to do? or am I missing something somewhere (highly likely).

Thanks in advance for any help/comments etc.

Behringer, but it works perfectly with audacity, so I don't think it is the problem.

Can you please be more specific about the Behringer model?

This is likely a setup issue, but if I knew which Behringer model you have -- and which OS you are running with it, could take a look at the downloadable manual for the device and offer some tips.

it's the UCG 102, and I'm using windows 7.
I am a bit confused as to why you think it's the usb, since it works fine with audacity, but if it helps cure the issue, go for it please.

My request was made because I've learned that just because one audio program handles a sound device in one manner does not mean that another audio program handles it in the same fashion. So it is good to know exactly what we are dealing with before attempting to solve reported problems.

The UCG102 is apparently a "Class Compliant" audio device, which means that it uses Windows' built in sound drivers rather than having the user install a separate set of drivers and software made specifically for the device.

The first thing to know about Band in a Box and most USB devices, be they audio like yours or just MIDI or both, is that the device must be hooked up and recognized by the OS *before* starting up Band in a Box. If Band in a Box is open first, it must be closed down completely, not just minimized, and then you may have to unplug and then plug the device back in while the desktop is your screen, noting the taskbar and seeing if the device is recognized after plugin. Sometimes the taskbar won't indicate that, depending upon system settings, so just wait after plugin maybe 20 secs. Other audio programs you have may recognize the device when plugged in after they are open and running, Band in a Box doesn't.

Your device is apparently getting to be a bit long in the tooth, the .pdf manual from Behringer lists only Win XP and Mac OSX. I don't think that's a problem, though, with Win7, as it should have legacy abilities and its a good thing that you report the fact that it does work within Audacity to be certain and rule that issue out.

Let's make certain that Band in a Box is set up properly for both input and output audio:

Under the Opt. menu inside BiaB, select, "MIDI/Audio Drivers Setup"

In the window that opens, hit the Audio Settings button at lower rh just above the Help button.

Top RH dropdown should be saying, "MME". Below that is Audio Drivers button, hit that to see the selection window.

Make sure that the Behringer device is listed on LH input pane and also highlighted,

Make sure that the Behringer device is also listed on RH Output pane and highlighted.

If either or both is not highlighted, click on them to highlight them before hitting Okay.

Hit Okay on the other windows each that may still be open.

Try recording in BiaB again, see if you can hear the guitar as you play it now.

If not, please don't give up or let frustration get in the way, report back your results for there may be something else going on and we'll have to deal with it from there.

Good Luck,

Thanks Mac

I have checked all those and they are set up to use the device, both input and output.
A bit more info, which may or may not be useful.

The device came with an oldish version of an amplifier modeller and recorder. This worked fine, monitoring and recording, but had latency when used with MME, so I downloaded, installed and set up ASIO4ALL. This also worked fine, with no latency. However, trying the same thing in BIAB gave me no improvement...input and recording fine/output of recorded sounds fine but still no monitoring whilst recording.

Still haven't given up.

OK I seem to have this sorted now. Tech Support have told me that BIAB does not have input monitoring facilities and it seems my lil ole netbook can't handle it directly, so I guess I am heading for a new machine.

What i would be looking in the direction of is a input device that has a driver applet. This will allow internal mixing of multiple signals. I simple thing like a USB 2x2 box would work.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
