Hi,

Comcast Cable provides free virus checking software for all registered subscribers: Norton 360 and a Comcast Home Grown called "Constant Guard". ConstantGuard is subtle in that it looks like it's just an encrypted password cache. But, buried deep in its configuration is a program blocker. My Band in a Box has been stopping silently at the splash screen for a couple of weeks. I tried removing interface.bbw (listed in another post) and bbw.exe would sometimes start 1 time. When I'd exit and try to start again BiaB would just show the splash and then quit. I tried disabling Norton figuring that that was my only virus blocker, but no Comcast Constant Guard was blocking bbw.exe as well.
I finally figured it out when I did a complete uninstall and reinstall of BiaB and RealBand and tried to launch both programs. BiaB was still giving the splash screen and dying. I don't run RealBand much, but when I tried to launch it, I finally got a warning from Constant Guard. Buried deep in Constant Guard's configuration is a way to unblock programs.
I'm on Vista64 but I don't think that would affect this problem. If you're a Comcast user and use their free virus/firewall software watch out if BiaB starts misbehaving.

Happy Music Making!

Thanks Bill,
We will contact the Constant Guard folks, and send them our exe's, and they should be able to remove that issue in future patches that they make. To be clear, there is no problem with the BiaB software, it is a falss positive.

FWIW, Avast! came up with warnings here also when attempting to use the install .exe files for BB.

However, Avast! has a routine where the user can select to run it anyway when the splash pops up. You can also tell it to permanently ignore for a particular program name. And that data gets sent to the Avast team automatically, maybe if enough reports come in they will add it to the ignore list someday.

But you can't really blame a protection software from at least asking you about ANY .exe program these days. It just makes good security sense for the protection software to do that. I'd rather have it flag a false positive than the alternative...

Most of the anti-virus programs work by searching for a certain string of bytes in the file. As the number of identified viruses increases, the chances of these false positives goes way up.

If you are unsure, you can always check an .exe, using 46 different virus scanners at once, by visiting virustotal.com and submitting the exe for testing. When you do this, you should see that none of the 46 show any positive readings.

Hello Peter and Mac,

Thanks and completely agree. Absolutely nothing wrong with BiaB. This is a Constant Guard problem that needs to get corrected. Thanks again for BiaB. I'll add that virustotal.com to my checks.

PS Mac - I don't mind a false positive either, but at least warn me that you blocked my program start! Shame on Comcast!

It most probably blocked the program blocking warning window too.

Oh, the irony...

Jokes aside, I've been using the Microsoft Security Essentials in all my computers since its inception and I've never ever had any problem with it blocking anything and never ever got any nasty either.

HTH,

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
