A regular on the OTR forum became frustrated with Win 8 so posted this link. I'm not using Win 8 so I only offer this as a unverified suggestion. And to those on Windows 8 who really miss the old Windows desktop, download the free ClassicShell (get it at classicshell.net -- saved me lots of headaches!). They're getting an average of 20,000 downloads a day on that site as people tire of figuring out the Windows Metro interface and decide they want to get something done! As our own Mac would say: YMMV Your mileage may vary!

Yes, this is good advice, or use a $5 program Start8.

Yes, this is good advice, or use a $5 program Start8. That's a good program. I told my son about it and he loves it.

Yes, this is good advice, or use a $5 program Start8. That's what I am using and it works perfectly! Matt nailed it. It's $4.99.

They do another good one too, Modernmix that will run all the apps from your desktop instead of going to start screen.

Is there an app that will let me run my old XP programs now that I have Win 7?

Flat, Win 7 has what Bill calls "Compatibility Mode" which makes Win 7 backward compatible. IIRC, you will require Administrator rights. It then becomes invisible.
Mercy buckets, that doesn't sound correct. What I meant was; Compatibility Mode becomes transparent when it has been applied to an XP app (or words to that affect.

I think compatibility mode is only available in Windows 7 Pro or better, not the Home or OEM editions.
Interestingly, I bought Pro for this reason but never had to use compatibility mode.

That may well be the case. I have Home Premium on my Dynavox and desktop machines. I have never needed to use it either but thought it worth a go. Can't hurt.

Yes, compatibility mode is available only on Win7 Pro or better.
I have it and I am running a photo-editing program from Win95 as well as a couple of XP programs in compatibility mode. Interesting that MS programs do not either run at all or only partially run. Office 95 does not run and Office 97’s Access does not run. Of course I have current Access databases that I started way back on my Atari that I can’t run in Office anymore. A big problem as my wife’s computer is XP and we share databases. Fortunately thus far my Internet computer is also XP so all isn’t a total lose, yet!
Yes, I have OpenOffice but I have had problems with it’s database.

Or learn to use Windows 8. :-) Kidding!
I've been using Windows 8 since beta. Couldn't even find the Control Panel at first. Have Windows 7 on a computer in my kitchen that I don't use very often. Went to shut it down the other day and said, "What the heck is going on with this thing?" Was trying to shut it down as you do on Windows 8. It's what you get used to!

I created desktop shortcuts in Windows 8 for both Shutdown and Restart. Makes things easier.

My youtube Diana Krall repeats and repeat this old "Gem"...as a stuggle wit my new Win 8 "Gateway"...
[url="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AKiR3b2RscU?]"
Few days ago, last of my four desktops running XP was cripped by the "free" Win 8 "incognito-", and I as soon over at Walmirage to get a new smallform Gateway with Win 8, 4gigRam and 500 G Hard Drive.
A real love-hate trying to learn the new "sliding" window.. I've added lots of addition apps...fought with my feeble 80-year-old mind which is challenged by MS leadingme down a meriad of maze-like patchs...
but....but....I do appreciate the above links and will grab a couple of them...no sense bearing up to this water-torcher without a shot of booze...or any easier way to meet the challenges of a new and frustrating widows "horizon".
Maybe it would be easier with a "touch" pad...
but maybe it's just too cool of a tool for this "musical journalist"...I keep expecting the AG and his goons to show up with his jp goons or irs to breakinto my RV...
Now do appear before a hearing in DC and invoke "The Fifth" again...or just buy a 5th!? Are we having fun with Win 8...
Only with yur help fellows...or it's the RV Detention Center at GitMo....

Rumor has it that m-soft may be working up their own way to give Win8 the things that people want, like the good old familiar desktop, etc.
Good chance that if it happens, it will be released as either an upgrade or Service Pack, which means free to registered users.
Let. Us. Pray.
On the other hand, Win7 is now fairly mature...

I learned I could get to the desktop with the WIN+D combination, but without the start menu, I still had difficulty finding things.
I installed a freebie start menu (I forget the name) on my Win8 machine. It's functional and gives me what I want.
I suppose if I had a touch screen I'd like the new interface, but with a mouse it's a bit of a time waster. Also it seems 'dumbed down" to me. Perhaps if I learned to use it I'd find it's more useful than I presently think it is.
I understand that MS wants the same interface for phones, tablets, and PCs and that isn't necessarily a bad idea. I think the start menu on my phone would be a bad idea.
Every time MS makes changes, so many of us dislike the change. In time, some of the changes actually turn out to be an improvement that we like. Time will tell.

Yes the Virtual PC (XP) mode is available only on Win 7 Pro. Bought it when I built my new desktop so I could still run some of my old XP compatible programs like Corel Draw.
One thing to remember is you must install your old XP programs while your Win 7 Pro is in the Virtual XP mode or they won't show up in the Virtual deckstop menu.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
