My Dynavox Speech Synthesis Device has just quit playing YT videos and streaming audio just when I got the Charge Nurse's permission to try music therapy with the "screamer" Alzheimer patient that they keep sedated. I suspect that my HD is too full of mp3 music.

It's Win 7 Home Premium with an Intel Atom CPU and 1 Gig of RAM. I have been experiencing slow initial boot times as well as re-boot times.

I have defragged and restored to earlier date, no help.

It reports 15.2 GB free of 56 GB drive.

What can I do to regain speed. I use to be able to play YT videos without problems but now the little search icon just continues to spin. Yes, I have full bars of WIFI signal strength.

Help, please.

I'm likely little help but....

If it were me the first thing I'd do is upgrade the memory (system maximum) as having only 1 gig could contribute to your stated annoyance.
Given today's resource hungry application demands it is my opinion that 1 gig is a bare minimum for anything to run/stream especially if other programs are running in the background (IE: Antivirus)

I'm sure others will offer some suggestions so at least here's a bump.

Carry on....

Try clearing the cache of your browser.

Then go to Start, Computer, Right-click on your boot disk drive, select Properties and do Disk Cleanup. Include offline web pages and temp files.

What Matt said. You may also want to check your actual internet speed:

Hi Don,

A problem I see on a rather regular basis meets the description of the problems you report.

It may be that your hard drive has been reset to PIO instead of DMA access by the System.

Read and understand this:

http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ComputerP...-xp-vista-7.htm

And here is a line by line tutorial in enabling DMA in Win7:

http://windows7themes.net/how-to-enable-dma-in-windows-7.html

I've never seen a case where doing this hoses the computer and I'd say that better than 90% of the time it is the cure for the problem where I work part time at the test benches.

When I un-collapse IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers in Device Manager I get another menu called Controllers Properties with an "OK" and "Cancel" button along the bottom edge.

The only menu option is: IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Clicking on that option does absolutely nothing.

Help!

Well, you have an Atom processor and 1 GB RAM. That means this is a netbook, isn't it? I don't know, but perhaps you don't have SATA drives in there, just IDE ones, which would give you that message. It's another indication that perhaps your computer doesn't have the fastest components. Running Geekbench would give us a better picture.

[My one try with a netbook didn't work out very well. I could not run BIAB on it with more than one RealTrack. Also, it died after a year, but that's another problem.]

Don, did you try the tweaks I mentioned above, and the test Bob gave?

Another thought: how many programs are running? Do you have a lot of little icons in the lower right? Do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager, and report how much CPU percent is free. See anything you don't recognize taking up a lot of the percent of CPU use?

Yes, Matt I applied your tweaks and boot/reboot is noticeably faster but trying to play a YT video still yields a perpetually stalled circling icon.

My Dynavox is not actually a laptop but a speech synthesis device which is grossly underpowered. I had a very savvy lady at Dynavox Support take control of my device about a year ago for similar sluggishness and she restored it beautifully. If all else fails, I will email her tomorrow.

Thanks, my friend.

I started having similar problems. (Win7 Home Premium) There seems to be a lot of other folks having the same prob. Some think it has to do with the flash player...

O'MacDonald, I'm okay. Just struggling with the incident report form for Dynavox Support. My dexterity has gotten much worse from last incident.

There is an onscreen form with name, model, serial number, and description of problem. Well, I can't even hit the text area reliably let alone trying to type in the information.

Same situation with running your little script file. I can't manage it.

Gotta figure sumfin else oot. Getting technical help from well meaning aides is nearly impossible. I'll see what Support suggests.

I think this is a valid consideration too.
From my experience, Flash Player doesn't always prompt/advise us that it's time to update.

Good luck...

Just spent 2 hours with Dynavox Support. Tech took control of my device and verified everything. It took a full 8 minutes to reboot. The final suggestion was to uninstall everything I don't use. I have very little that I don't use and haven't installed anything new in months.

Whelp, back to the drawing board...

I don't have time at the moment to read all the posts and suggestions, but heres one in case it hasn't been mentioned.

Try right clicking on youtube video screen--->settings---> either enable or disable hardware acceleration, just try the above as it may well reset everything for you.

Took 8 minutes to reboot? Tech must have loved that.

Now I'm beginning to suspect equipment failure. Either that, or a serious virus.

If possible, try an alternative browser. I have a laptop that plays YT videos fine with FF but won't play them in IE. Also make sure the administrators on your net work haven't blocked YT. It's blocked at my work for resource issues. I was visiting a relative at the hospital one day and they had eBay and YouTube both blocked on the public wi-fi because the employees would get on and use them.

Running a boot scan now with Avast. Actually, the tech went on to other customers and had me time it.

@Keith, mine is a private internet connection, not the facility. I have absolutely no problem with YT on my desktop.

Tech suspects Freecorder. What do you use for recording audio from the web? I just neutered Freecorder. At one time, Firefox recommended it. They don't any longer. To much invasive garbage attempts to bloat your system.

8 minute reboot sounds mighty like the hard drive is indeed running PIO instead of DMA mode, Don. That, too, is one of the4 symptoms.

PIO mode means that your microprocessor is being tasked with handling disk I/O - and the processor in your Dynavox is not up to that task, not that it would be good even if the thing had an overclocked i7 in it, mind you.

Maybe you can convince that tech guy to take control of your machine again, grab that file out of the email I sent you and run it. Maybe.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
