Hey everybody! I'm having a problem getting many of the preset melodists and soloists to work/make midi. Some of them, when I click ok in the soloist/melodist dialog box, it pauses for a moment then automatically starts the music with the solo/melody. For a lot of them, it doesn't automatically play, and also doesn't even create the solo or melody.

Thanks! I'm new so I could be missing something. I'd love to know what may be wrong.

After a little more experimentation, it seems like it may have to do with each st2 file I have selected for the soloist or melodist. Certain ones seem to not generate solos and melodies... what's wrong???

Another update. It also won't play the written melody entered! I'm very confused now.

Ok, something I did made it play the written melody, so you might be able to forget about that part.

I was just about to post a comment about the exact same problem when I saw yours. On one particular song the Melodist and Soloist simply won't generate any notes even though theses features work fine on other songs and with the exact same styles and parameters. I don't know if I've inadvertently disabled something or what else the problem could be. I know that's not much of a contribution to solving the problem but at least you know it's not just you, lol.

You just might be able to get to the bottom of this much faster by contacting PGMusic Support directly, the tollfree hotline or email.

I think I figured out the Soloist problem. In the Soloist dialog box there's a section labeled "Solo Which Choruses?" and the first chorus seems to default to "If no Melody" which means if the first chorus has a melody then it won't generate any solo and since the song I was working on only has one chorus and a melody it generated no notes. I switched the setting to "Yes-solo" and it worked ok.

The Melodist now seems to be working too but I don't think it's related to Soloist settings. I think I was just looking at the wrong track.

There's a great video tutorial on using the Melodist and Soloist found at the below link.

Simply scroll down the page to the section labelled "Video Archives".

Although I can't seem to get it to play ... I get error messages from Windows Media Player, and other software won't work either. Any one else have this problem?

What exactly are the error messages, and what steps do you take to reproduce. What other software doesn't work? What file(s) are you using, etc? This information may assist to provide answers.

I double click on the file in Windows Explorer, which launches Windows Media Player, which gives the message, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." The other programs, which just crash, are GOM Player and VLC Media Player. All three have always been able to play WMV files for me.

Can you play this file?

Hi lingyai,

My apologies. I should have mentioned that you might need to download a codec to get the videos to work.

If you go to the same link ...

http://www.pgmusic.com/videos.bbwin.htm

... at the top of the web page, on the right side, you'll find a link to the TSCC codec. This was a codec that PG Music used to use.

Clicking on the above link will take you to TechSmiths. The download link for the TSCC codec is at the very bottom of the TechSmith's webpage. The link will download an exe file. Simply run that and it will install the codec in the right place. Once this codec is installed, all should work fine.

All the best,
Noel

Hi, thanks Noel for that tip.

Oddly, I found that I couldn't download this WMV as I could the others, but rather only watch online; and that for some reason, I could only watch online using Internet Explorer, not Chrome or Firefox.

Anyway, thanks again.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
