Someone gave me an old Yamaha PSR 172. The thing has got to be 20 years old. There is no USB port, although there is a midi in and out jack also a sustain pedal jack. I know this keyboard is obsolete, however, the grand piano effect sounds amazingly realistic through an amp or headphones, and it has 61 keys as opposed to my Oxygen 25 key controller. I thought I might be able to use this dinosaur just for that piano effect if nothing else. Well, that and the extra 36 keys I’m wondering if there is any way to run this old keyboard through my controller to my laptop. Perhaps from the midi out jack on the Yamaha into the midi in on my Oxygen then from the controller into my laptop with the USB cable.
Other than RB and BIAB, I’m also using Studio 1-2 Artist with the ProSonus Audobox and Audacity for editing. Thought I’d float this by the forum before wasting money on XLR cables and possibly messing up what I have finally got working. I just love the sound of that piano. Guess I could just play live and mic the amp, or just plug the Yamaha directly into the AudioBox as an instrument. This may be the only way to get the Grand Piano sound into any of my DAWs. I'm just trying to prevent any driver issues or conflicts between the two keyboards.
Any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks, Mac:
So in other words hooking up this adaptor to the Yamaha would be eliminating the Oxygen 25 controller altogether or could I still use both. This cable would connect to both midi line out and line in on the Yamaha to a USB port on the laptop? Without downloading aditional drivers for the old keyboard?

no drivers needed for the old keyboard. May need them for the computer though.
Most likely it'll just work.
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

This cable would connect to both midi line out and line in on the Yamaha to a USB port on the laptop? Without downloading aditional drivers for the old keyboard? I would highly recommend only connecting one keyboard at a time. For starters, Band in a Box can only recognize and use ONE MIDI input and ONE MIDI output at a time. Use a USB device like the one I linked to above for that older but very fine Yamaha keyboard. Use the USB connect for the Oxygen 25 for times when you want to use that one. The key here is that you can't switch between the two USB MIDI while BB is open and running. To switch, you have to first shut down BB, then disconnect one USB and connect the other, then start BB back up and visit the MIDI/Audio Settings window and reselect the proper input and output for each one. Since the Oxygen has no sounds of its own, that means when using it, you'd likely have to select a DXi synth as well. Realband, on the other hand, can indeed work with both connected at the same time. The caveats for a new user are there, though, this can often be confusing and many times the user is not sure what exactly is making the sounds... Once you use that Yamaha a bit, though, I doubt you'll want to work with the Oxygen much. --Mac

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
