I've installed BiaB on a my D drive (1 HDD 2 partitions C and D) but I can't get the program to associate files at all. The same problem has happened on my friends PC too and we can't find a solution.

Using Vista Home Premium, the problem seems to be a result of installing BiaB on a drive other than the system drive (C). Using the "open with" option when right clicking the file and browsing to the bbw.exe Vista fails to add it as the default program for which to open those file types. The only program available to associate is Acrobat Reader.

I tried copying bbw.exe to the "program files" folder in the system drive to see if it would show up as an option to be selected in the "open with" window... low and behold there it was and Vista would allow me to associate the files, but of course I only copied the bbw.exe from the D drive where BiaB is installed so the program wouldn't run from the "program files" location. We tried locating the files (SGU etc) to the same directory as the installation of BiaB and that didn't work either.

Next we tried the new option in Biab to allow the program to associate the files (file/file utilities/associate files) but that didn't work either, BiaB reported that it had associated the files but in fact it had not. I have 2008.5 and my friend has 2007.5.

My feeling is that it's an operating system problem rather than BiaB, it's happened on two different computers (mine and my friend) both with the same OS and configuration (ie installed on D drive instead of C).

It's a real inconvenience having to open songs from my library using file/open etc when previously I could simply double click a file from an open window.

I really hope someone can help us with this... it's driving me nuts!!

Thanks in advance - Ian

Try this -- see "manual solutions" below first paragraphs. Might be helpful. I personally don't use Vista but this discussion seems on point.

I would guess that Windows is pointing to the wrong place - especially if you moved BIAB. Your BIAB files should show up in the folder with the BIAB icon. If not, open a folder and choose Tools|Folder Options... and select File Types. Scroll down the files until you find a BIAB type such as MGU. Select that type and press the Advanced... button. There you should see the Open and Play association. Hit the Edit button and that should show you where Windows is pointing to. If it is not correct, fix that and your associations should be OK.

Hi Ian,

I too use Vista Home Premium with BIAB on drive D

I do not have your problem - my song file is on drive D but I have another copy of it on drive C

Biab does not write to registry and does not show the same as a standard program - the tools for indentifying Biab are in Biab
- in File > File Utilities >Change directory path and in the Song Picker window where you can change the path of the Song List

1an might need to turn off User Account Control UAC first.

Since it didn't "take" -- make sure that you are logged on as Administrator, too.

In Vista go to Control Panel go to Default Programs which is a ball with 4 colours, I think it's intuitive from there.....

This happens to me on WinXP SP3, BB 2009 . I thought it was to be expected because BB doesn't write to the registry.

The "open with" menu does not list bbw.exe (or anything related to BB). When I navigate to bbw.exe and select it, it still doesn't show in "open with," and clicking on a BB-exensioned file has no effect.

Am I the only one?

Hi Dave,

When I first installed BIAB2009 on Vista 32 I also could not find it on the "Open with" page but I clicked on "Browse" navigated to drive D > found the BB folder > then the BB icon and bought it into view
Can't remember if it was the same on XP but worth a look

BIAB's own file association routine wizard has always worked here, XP Home and Pro, SP2 and SP3.

PCMusic has been using Vista for development for quite some time now, the last beta test, BB2009, there were even a goodly amount of beta testers using Vista also, nobody reported file association problems then, so we have to figure out what's going on now.

I'm pretty certain that there are various OS settings or options at work here, we need to figure out which ones apply, though.

Hey guys! Thank you for all your suggestions, we have the problem solved!!

Vista simply wouldn't allow the bbw.exe to be added to the default programs list, for some reason this only happened when installing it on a drive other than the system drive. Jazzman says he has his BiaB installed on his D drive and has no issues with file associations so I can't pin down a reason why both myself and my friend are experiencing the same problem.

Anyway the good news is Lloyd (2nd post) is a genius and the link he provided worked a treat. We used the small program there to force Vista to include BiaB in the default program/open with window. It took a while to locate each of the different file types BiaB uses and then associate them properly but we got there in the end.

Thank you Lloyd

Great community forum too, I wasn't expecting so many answers in such a short time.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
