I put this info into a new post just in case others may have the same reason I do (if indeed this was my issue) for the many issues with 2010.

Without boring you with all the issues I have been having with 2010 on my system (the latest being garbled playbacks) thanks to tips by Noel96 and Da Macster I think I have found the enemy . . . . and yes me thinks it was me all along.

#1. My "BIAB only laptop" is an old Thinkpad with a 1.60 GHz Processor – 599 MHz with 760MB of ram. But I do have BIAB and all of my music files installed on an external hardrive.

#2. My back up is a newer Toshiba Dual Core 2.00GHz 64-bit System with 4.00 GB of ram.

#3. For the heck of it I installed all of BIAB 2010 on the backup Toshiba and so far (fingers crossed) all is working well, including the freeze option for realtracks.

Could it be the old Thinkpad needs more Ram, and you actually add Ram to a laptop?

Thanks for all the help,

Just curious (and too lazy to research your older post) did you try running BIAB from the external hd on the newer Toshiba? And by chance do you know if the usb ports on the old one are version 2 or perhaps old version 1 (or 1.1)? Might have some impact on how it played with the external hd.
Good luck.

Barry,

None of the above . . . I installed from the DVDs onto my own external 500 gig hardrive. I did not run the external hardrive from the Toshiba but I will try that in the morning. But it did run perfectly from the internal 160 gig Toshiba hardrive.

I am not sure about the usb ports from one laptop to the next, all I know is that they look and work the same. I guess I am missing something or I did not know they were two different types of usb ports.

Later,

Danny,

From what Peter Gannon has said in the past, the "fast" processing of Realtracks is a background process. When you generate a song, BIAB will being rendering the Realtracks and when a sufficient number of bars have been rendered, the song will start playing. While the song is playing, the remaining bars of Realtracks continue to be generated. I suspect that you are expecting too much from a 1.6 GHz processor with less than a megabyte of RAM. It might work if you have only a single Realtrack in the mix, but, if you have four Realtracks the background processing would be a huge drain on your resources.

Regards,
Noel

I believe the CPU is the main issue, not Ram. I tried the RealTrack background generation on my old XP system, 2.63 GHz with 1.5 GB Ram. The song sputtered until the RT was completely generated. My more current laptop with with dual 1.73 GHz CPU and 2 GB Ram, no problem.

Hey Danny--

You may find joy with one or more of the following tweaks on that old laptop:

*Change Processor Scheduling to 'Background Services'

Control Panel ->System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> and set Processor Scheduling to "Background Services".

Incidentally, this is a very good thing for anyone trying to run ASIO sound drivers to do also. ASIO is a Background Service. But now that we know that the Fast RealTracks loading is a Background Service also, it may just be one of the few tweaks we need to do in XP as a matter of course.

*Defrag the C: drive.
Do a Disk Cleanup first, then run Defrag. Ignore Windows when it says you don't need to defrag, just do it.

*Set your disk swap cache size manually

Control Panel ->System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> System Cache

Now select the manual setting where you enter your size and enter a size that is twice your physical ram size. W/768 ram, that would be 1536, okay to just round it to 1500 or any number near there.
i doubt if it is a lack of ram. FWIW.

Mac,

Following your advice above seems to have corrected all of my issues with 2010 and realtracks. The old Thinkpad seems to have renewed life!

I never would have never done this in a million years without your advice above. I owe you big time as if this works it will be the cumlination of over 36 hours of trail and error on my part.

Thanks also to Noel96.

BIG THANKS!

Mac,

Thanks for the above tip about background services. I'd never have thought of that one as I haven't played around with it since Windows 98. On Vista the location is slightly different.

Control Panel >> System >> Advanced System Settings >> Advanced >> (Performance) Settings

I tried your suggestions here, including changing the disk swap size, and no joy yet; those files still saved with a real soloist still generate the access violation and related errors. I have not defragged the drive; I'll try that tonight.

Thank you.

Here is the Windows 7 version:
Control Panel-> System and Security-> System-> Advanced System Settings-> Advanced-> Performance Settings-> Advanced-> Set Processor scheduling to background services.
You can skip the first two steps by pressing the windows key and pause Break key at the same time.
Brian

One other fast way is just click on the start and type in advanced in the search box and select View advanced system settings from the list and you are there!!!

They have not done one for Windows 7 as of yet but I would think the Vista might be close.

Marc,

I thought you had read my solution to this problem in my other post. Now I'm not sure so I'll just mention the solution here as well.
  • Restart BIAB afresh.
  • Load in one of the files you are having problems with.
  • Unfreeze the Soloist.
  • Erase the Soloist track (right-click on Soloist >> Erase Track). You'll be asked if you want to erase MIDI data as well. Say Yes/OK to everything.
  • Save the file. If you have no melody, the file will now save as .SGU rather than the previous .MGU
  • Restart BIAB. The file should now open and play. You'll have to regenerate a solo, though.

I might be speaking too soon, but I have had 100% success with the above process for recovering BIAB arrangments.

Regards,
Noel

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
