I've been asked to score a Regimental March for trumpets, trombones, clarinets, and saxes.

It's an old British tune Begone Dull Care.

Signal Corps, Brit and American use it. The Brits stick it in with the Wagoneer.

What I find it's 12/8 so Band in a Box is going to be tough. I can't seem to find much..anyone care to 'pontificate?'

I did find a sort of midi file.....but where do I go from there. It's a reunion of old WW2 vets and 10 of them are old Sigs guys and the organizers want to do all the regimental marches and that one is missing. Someone told them I can get background music and play a horn and do it. Ya, a G baritone marching horn is no problem I still have a really good range on that, but I can't find a file to do the parts. As of today....

Do you just wish to score it from some other medium, such as midi, or do you wish to arrange the whole thing starting with just the basic melody?

If just score, them I suggest you use something like Finale or Sibelius. Drop a midi into you scoring program and then change it around to suit your particular band's line-up.

If you wish to completely arrange it, Band-in-a-Box is really only a good place to start the task.

Set up a March style that you like. It does not matter about the time signature at this stage, although I would be used to seeing 6/8. I find you can only score two parts at a time, so maybe trumpets with a BB harmony of choice in the Melody screen, and trombones with harmony in the Soloist screen. I would then do two copies of the tune file, each time setting up the other instruments - saxes and clarinets – with harmonies in the Soloist tracks.

Then I would drop the parts so created in Finale or Sibelius and stitch the whole thing together. Change the time signature if necessary and introduce new instruments - whatever.

It may sound like a long-winded process but it saves a huge amount of time with the harmony parts - depending on how fast you work manually of course. Anyway, it saves me heaps of time with big band arrangements.

Maybe Band-in-a-Box with be able to produce better scores one of these days, but I don't think you can use it to do the whole thing at this stage of development. And development does not seem to be heading that way.

If you are very clever using tracks you may not have to set up so many copies as I do. Stitching the whole thing together in the scoring program is a breeze.
That is my opinion. Maybe others have found a better way to work to arrive at a score with individual printed parts.

Thanks, I'm going to try the one midi file I could find, put it in my notation software and see what comes up. Once again the 6/8 thing rears it's head in Band in a Box.

As Paddy says ta Mike, "why don ye take the steerin wheel out from between yer legs mate', and Mike says "I'd like ta, buts' driven me nuts."

Taylor's midi of it is here:

http://www.contemplator.com/tunebook/england.htm

As is usual Barry HAS to change key in every song, I never got that.....

The Brits Sigs Corps orginally used The Wagoneer and stuck 16 bars of that tune in the middle. The Canadian Sigs just used that as the march past.

This is a bunch of 80 yr old guys getting together at the Vimy Ridge branch of the local Legion for an annual reunion, and there are a dozen musicians. Col. Dick was supposed to send me what he wanted for parts, how many clarinets, trumpets etc. if I could pull this off. I suspect 2 parts in for Bflat and a part for C and one for Eb might to the trick. He said there are 5 guys who were in that unit going, they have all the other regimental marches covered.

The Regimental Band I played in disbanded. At the end the remaining old guys would not play a 3 valve horn, they wanted to stick with the single valve g bugles, and only 3 guys could march. To bad, Lord Elgin paid the airfare for the Band to go to Holland and Scotland every 5 years. I missed the one trip, the next one was this year...sigh...

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
