hello biab forums,
i have biab 2008, well i just bought a yamaha dgx640 keyboard, i wanted to play on it and edit the music in biab.
my problem is that i am connecting the keyboard thru the usb. now i have updated the driver from yamaha called the usb-midi and it is listed in the device manager. But i have no midi sound/input from the midi sound input driver list, i get an error that windows is not recognizing a driver, i use xp, and the sound card i have is SB X-Fi Titanium.
thanks, craig

MIDI is not sound. It is just data, digital 0's and 1's (or on/off)
Select the USB device in the midi device panel for the input side. Select the X-FI for the output side. *Note - USB device should be hooked up and recognized by Windows before starting BiaB or RB.
Make sure the MIDI out of keyboard is connected to the MIDI IN of computer. Now when you play the keyboard you should see the notes get highlited on the keyboard at top of screen in BiaB or RB, and hear the sound come from the X-FI card.
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

the usb device is not available on the input side; that is the problem--i can see the device in window's device manager under Sounds, Video and Game Controllers---listed as Yamaha USB-MidI Driver.
on the yamaha itself it is outputted thru a terminal host in the back of the unit.
so if it is recognized by windows why won't BIAB list it so i can use it as an input driver.
thanks,
craig

Good question. If Windows sees the device but BIAB does not, even if you waited to start BIAB like rharv said. then I suggest you call PG Music Support.
A work-around would be to use MIDI out from the keyboard, if you have that.

Hi zpupster,
When using a USB device, it is important to have that device plugged in and recognied by the OS *BEFORE* starting a host program such as Band in a Box.
This is because BiaB performs a routine that looks for all available devices when BiaB is first started up. If the program has already started when you connect the USB device, the System may be able to see it and declare it available, but BiaB can't. If you forget to plug in the MIDI device before starting BB, don't just minimize BB to the taskbar, close it down completely, then connect the USB, then open BB. You should then be able to see the USB device in the list as well as choose it.

Not an option; it only has USB, no MIDI connections!

Thanks for checking, Bob. I'm surprised a keyboard would not support MIDI.

Are you sure you have installed the USB drivers correctly, see page 104 of your manual. If in question then uninstall the drivers and start again. It is very important that you do not have anything running in the background when installing drivers. Things like anti-virus, anti-spyware etc can corrupt driver installs.
I hope this helps - MarioD
PS - I have had driver installs "burp" doing installation and I have to reinstall them to get them to work. Maybe that is the case here - don't know.
PPS - another after thought. What version of XP are you using? I have one USB driver that is not compatible with SP3, even though it says it is!

My Yamaha Tyros connects via USB cable and the midi IS routed through that. I suspect he did not have the cable connected prior to starting Biab.
If I open Biab and the USB cable is not connected, Biab will assign the generic Windows GM Synth. His should show both input and output in Biab if he has the driver installed AND the cable connected with his keyboard powered up prior to opening Biab.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
